Southampton vs Wolves: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 14th February 2021
Kick off at 12noon GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton have the poorest form of any club in the Premier League over the past month. They made the headlines because they lost 9-0 against Manchester United but there are also the defeats against Arsenal, Aston Villa and Leicester to consider too. Last weekend they were beaten by Newcastle which, means they have the distinction of conceding 12 goals in their last two games.

But there was some good news away from the league games, and that was reaching the FA Cup quarter finals by beating Wolves away from home 2-0. It was a terrific result given their recent form and now the two teams get to do it again except this time Southampton have home advantage.

Home form isn’t very convincing for the Saints because they have won 5 games but also lost 5 and that includes losing their last two. It’s interesting to note that when Southampton knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup their next league match was facing the Gunners, which they lost, will history repeat?

Wolves had a terrible January but they look like coming back from that ever so slightly. Though as mentioned above they were knocked out of the FA Cup in midweek by their opponents for this game. However a poor run looks to have stopped, and their recent results have seen a draw against Chelsea, a win over Arsenal, and a draw against Leicester, and that’s a pretty decent return from those games.

However we need to have caution when looking at Wolves away form as they have lost six games from the 11 played, won just 3 and have no wins on the road for over 2 months. The clubs last away match ended in a 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace.

Team News:

Southampton: Alexandre Jankewitz is suspended for this game after his red card v Manchester United. Ibrahima Diallo has a muscle injury and is expected to be out long term. Theo Walcott is also out with a muscle injury and could miss some significant time. William Smallbone looks set to miss the rest of the season with his knee injury.

Wolves: Willy Boly has a hamstring injury and has been ruled out. Marcal has recovered from his groin and has a tiny chance to make it for this game, could be rested for another week or so. Daniel Podence is out with a muscle injury.

Southampton vs Wolves Head to Head:

Last season Wolves won this fixture 3-2.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the match ended 1-1.

In their last 4 Premier League meetings each one has finished with both teams to score.

Southampton vs Wolves Prediction:

Wolves could go past Southampton with a win and they have the better form to do so. But with the Saints being at home and the fact that they just beat Wolves in the cup they will feel confident of victory, and the poor run is bound to stop at some point. What better place than at St Mary's?

This will be a close and tense game for the most part but the Saints must start with a confident mood, given their league form Wolves could come into this one the longer it goes on but we will back the Saints to edge this encounter, they just need to get out of the blocks quick enough to make an impact.
