Match Preview:

There’s been a lot of column inches in the past week dedicated to Southampton manager Nathan Jones and they have been negative. Jones is under real pressure only months into the job to keep it and no wonder as the Saints are bottom of the league.

It’s just 1 win in the last five and the other games have all been losses and it doesn’t bear well to see the club have lost 14 of their 21 games so far. And yet quite remarkably there is every hope that the club will stay up. Time is on their side for now and just a couple of wins would easily take them out of the bottom three. The clubs last victory came away at Everton but apart from that it has been depressing times for the club. Last weekend they lost 3-0 against Brentford and in general goals have been the problem, with just 17 scored only Everton have less.

Home form for the Saints has been poor with just 1 win so far and they have lost 60% of their games here overall. Recent form is look away stuff for fans as they have lost their last 4 in a row.

Wolves are in a struggle too but they received a huge boost last weekend as they made light work of an indifferent Liverpool side winning that game 3-0. The club have had some tough fixtures lately as they also had to play Manchester City which they lost but they have won 2 of their last three games and it’s only one defeat in their last four. All of this means that they have gone 5 points clear of their hosts and sit in 15th place. Of course they could be dragged back into the bottom three in just one game so they will need to push on.

Team News:

Southampton: Stuart Armstrong is recovering well from his groin but this game may have come too soon for him although he is rated at 50/50 and will be assessed. Alex McCarthy will be assessed but could return as he had fitness issues previously, Kyle Walker-Peters will be assessed but is being tipped to return next week instead.

Wolves: Hwang Hee-Chan will miss the next 4 weeks at least with a hamstring injury. Mario Lemina has a knock and will be assessed. Pedro Neto could return after being sidelined with an ankle injury and will be assessed. Boubacar Traore is still out with his muscle injury and not due back for at least three weeks.

Southampton vs Wolves Head to Head:

Last season Wolves won this fixture 1-0.

Wolves have won the last 4 meetings in a row.

It’s been almost four years since Southampton beat Wolves when at home.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Southampton vs Wolves Prediction:

This is a difficult game to predict having two clubs down there but the truth is that Wolves come into this game with more of a positive spirit. Their form is better and there has been a lot of pressure on Saints boss Nathan Jones. The win market is quite open which is a surprise and at the end of the day Wolves have a terrific recent record over the Saints, so while this game feels like it could be a draw we will back Wolves for the win but cover the draw on the refund for extra security.

We do expect to see a tight game though and there is an awful amount of pressure on the Saints, if they go a goal down this one could become nervy and physical and it might be worth backing to see a red card during this game. Of caution though is Wolves away form which is very poor with six games lost from 10 they have won on the road just once this season so far.
