England Premier League
Sunday 16th October 2022
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: St Mary's Stadium
Match Preview:
Southampton have been in free fall in the past month and have the worst form in the Premier League after losing their last 4 in a row. Apart from their last game which they lost 4-0 against Manchester City the other opponents, it could be argued, could have yielded more points than zero for the Saints and the pressure will be under Ralph Hasenhuttl coming into this game.
The Saints are in 17th place and just one point from the bottom three but it is a tight squeeze and just one win can change a lot for the club. But the Saints have not won a game since the end of August when they somewhat surprisingly beat Chelsea. Home form is also a worry for the club who have the 2nd to worst record in the league with just one win so far and 4 points won from a possible 12. Their last home game finished in a 2-1 defeat against Everton.
West Ham have had a slow start to the season but perhaps that is changing now after winning their last two games in a row. Those victories came against Wolves and Fulham also in midweek the Hammers have cruised for qualification into the knock out stages of the Europa Conference League after beating Anderlecht. The important thing for the Hammers is that the winning feeling is there for them and they will now want to push on. Despite the upturn in fortunes for now away form is still a concern for David Moyes side who have won just once this season on the road.
Team News:
Southampton: Moussa Djenepo is ruled out through illness, Romeo Lavia is back in training following a muscle injury but isn’t due back until next week.
West Ham: Michail Antonio will be assessed as he was ill earlier in the week. Maxwell Cornet is out with a calf injury but could return next week, Craig Dawson has a dead leg and will be assessed. Thilo Kehrer has a slight knock and will be assessed. Angelo Ogbonna has a slight hamstring problem and is rated at only 50/50 for this game. Kurt Zouma has a cold and is a slight doubt. An update on long term injury Nayef Aguerd suggests that the defender could make his debut for the club at the end of this month.
Southampton vs West Ham Head to Head:
The teams last game here was earlier this year in the FA Cup when Southampton knocked out the Hammers beating them 3-1.
It’s been 4 games since West Ham beat Southampton and 3 years since they won away.
There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.
Southampton vs West Ham Prediction:
Normally this is a game that would be too far of a stretch for West Ham to go and win against a physical and solid team at home. But the Hammers have not only improved vastly over the past two years but they have also found good form in the last few weeks and should come here in good terms. There are goals in this Hammers side and we have been impressed with Jarrod Bowen who always seems to pop up and score important ones and we can see the youngster doing so again in this game.
Southampton can’t be trusted at the moment with the poor form they are in and if Moyes team can score early then the game could well be settled for the Hammers who will then be able to control the pace of the game. There isn’t a lot between the clubs in reality but you get the sense that the Hammers are really finding their form now and we should follow them.
