Southampton vs Watford: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 13th March 2022
Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton will be the favourites to win this game but the club have been struggling with form lately and the worry for the Saints will be that their season is petering out.

The Saints have lost their last two games in the league with defeats against Aston Villa and Newcastle. The Newcastle one would have been disappointing given that they were at St Mary's but at least they stay here and they will want to use the Watford game as a bounce back win. The Saints are in 10th place with 35 points and are more than safe but almost 10 points adrift of a European finish with games running out.

At home results have been dominated by draws with seven achieved so far. Had those been converted into wins the club would now have 49 points and be in 4th place so it just goes to show that draws are not always the ideal result. The clubs defeat against Newcastle was only their 2nd at home so far, so they have been a tough unit in front of their home fans.

Watford look doomed and yet mathematically they are far from it. But just recent results and performances point to Roy Hodgson’s side playing Championship football next season. The Hornets are in 19th place and are 3 points from safety but have played 3 more games than the team they need to get past, Everton. It’s been almost a month since the club won a game and their last game was a disaster as they lost 4-0 at Wolves and that won’t do their confidence any good.

That game followed a 3-2 defeat against Arsenal and there just doesn’t seem like there is any light at the end of the tunnel for Watford.

Team News:

Southampton: Nathan Tella will be assessed due to a lack of match fitness. Alex McCarthy and Lyanco both hamstring are out long term.

Watford: Femenia has a knock and will have to be assessed. Joao Pedro is a doubt as he missed the last game due to illness. Jeremy Ngakia has recovered from his hamstring and has been pencilled in to return for this game. Joshua King has a slight neck injury and will be assessed. Nicolas N’Koulou has a lack of match fitness and is a major doubt to be back for this game and is aiming more for next week.

Southampton vs Watford Head to Head:

The last time this fixture was played when Southampton were at home was in 2019 and they won 2-1.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the Saints won 1-0 and have won the last 3 meetings in a row and remained unbeaten for the last seven.

4 of the last 5 meetings has seen both teams to score.

Southampton vs Watford Prediction:

This isn’t Watford’s last roll of the dice but it feels like it especially if Leeds and Everton pick up wins this weekend, then we will see the gap really becoming wider. Watford have some major problems but they are a proud team who fight to get something from the game, that was evident against Arsenal even though they were outclassed in certain situations. However the Arsenal game was at home and the worry for any relegation threatened side at this time of the season is that playing away from home just feels ten times harder and Southampton are a strong side who can make life very difficult for Hodgson’s side.

Watford need to find the defence that was able to frustrate Manchester United a few weeks ago and they need to recover quickly from the Wolves defeat and not feel too sorry for themselves. Southampton have a lot of quality up front and we expect them to find their way the longer the game goes on and win the match by the odd goal.
