England Premier League
Sunday 20th September 2020
Kick off at 12noon BST
Venue: St Mary's Stadium
Match Preview:
Southampton made a disappointing start to the season as they lost 1-0 away to Crystal Palace. The Saints were arguably the better team and had plenty of decent chances but at the end of the day they couldn’t score an equaliser and couldn’t get back into the game. This match will represent their first home league game of the season and it could be a tricky encounter for them.
The Saints misery has been compounded this week as they went out of the Carabao Cup losing 2-0 at home to Brentford, it’s fair to say that it has been a miserable week for the club.
All the buzz is with Tottenham in the past few days as the prodigal son looks set to return on loan, Mr Gareth Bale arguably one of the best and certainly most successful British players in recent times. Bale is seen as a club legend and his return after seven years has captured most of the sports headlines and pages. He has arrived for training and is even being tipped to play in this game. If he does football throws up irony and coincidence again given that Southampton was Bale’s first club.
Jose Mourinho’s side also look like being on the verge of signing Sergio Reguilon for £27m from Real Madrid, Reguilon plays as a left back. Tottenham mean business after losing their first game of the season against Everton where they looked toothless, and they will need to bounce back super quick.
Team News:
Southampton: Stuart Armstrong could miss this game through a thigh injury it kept him out of the Saints first game of the season too. Nathan Redmond has a slight knock but is expected to be fine for this game
Tottenham: The club have no new fresh injury worries coming into this game.
Southampton vs Tottenham Head to Head:
Last season Southampton won this fixture 1-0.
Tottenham haven’t won at Southampton since 2016.
8 of the last 9 meetings has seen both teams to score.
Southampton vs Tottenham Prediction:
This has the potential to be one of the best games of the weekend. Southampton can be a handful at home and Tottenham have not played well here in recent times. At the same time the feeling is Tottenham need a win to erase their loss last weekend and move on.
Will Bale play? He will generate a lot of excitement in the dressing room, though Dele Alli may not agree with that if Bale ends up taking his place. There is a lot of quality in the side but they need to find the perfect balance. Surely there will be a positive response from the club after last weekend? Tottenham will have to suffer to get the result here and it's tricky to call with any certainty, and we think this is a game that can have a few goals in it.
