Venue: St Mary's Stadium
Match Preview:
Southampton are seven points to the good over Newcastle and in 9th place, and are chasing Wolves in 8th. The Saints have been solid in the last few months but that good form was blown apart at the weekend as they lost 4-0 at Aston Villa.
It was a performance to forget from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side however the majority of their points have come at home where from the 35 the club have on the board 22 have come at home. The Saints have only lost 1 game at home so far but it has been the amount of draws at home that has anchored the club and they have drawn 7 games so far from 13. The good news is that the Saints have won their last two home games, against Everton and Norwich, before that they were able to hold Manchester City to a draw, so this is club who need to be respected at home.
Newcastle have gone their last 8 games undefeated and have climbed well out of the relegation zone which seems like old news now. They are in 14th place and seven points from the drop, and the only way is up for the Magpies now and if they keep this form up they could well finish in the top half of the league and that would be a remarkable recovery even if of course the club spent £80m in the January transfer window.
Newcastle’s last result was a 2-1 victory over Brighton and away from home they have lost 50% of their games but recent form has seen them go three games without defeat. The Magpies last defeat on the road came at the hands of Liverpool almost 3 months ago.
Team News:
Southampton: Mohammed Salisu is doing well with his hamstring injury and could be assessed and make his comeback for this game. Nathan Tella has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness and looks set to miss this game but could return in a few days time. Alex McCarthy and Lyanco- both hamstring- are out long term.
Newcastle: Matt Ritchie is only 50/50 to return from his knee injury and is expected to miss out here. Ryan Fraser will be assessed after his recent muscle injury. Kieran Trippier is out for an extended period with his foot injury and Callum Wilson may not return until May with a calf injury.
Southampton vs Newcastle Head to Head:
Last season Southampton won this fixture 2-0.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game finished 2-2.
Newcastle have won 5 of the last 8 meetings between the teams.
4 of the last six meetings has seen both teams to score.
Southampton vs Newcastle Prediction:
It might seem odd to go against a team in form like Newcastle but in reality their great run will come to an end and Southampton are no mugs, especially at home. The Saints will be wanting to bounce back from a heavy defeat and their whole season for survival has been based on their home form.
It will be fascinating to watch Newcastle who are pumped full of confidence take on Southampton but the Magpies are seen to be the outsiders here and are being quoted at 3.75 to win, there is a reason and that is we have to respect Southampton’s home record. Of course this is a test for the Saints after just conceding four goals but we will back them to win and they certainly have the players up front to make a difference with their home fans roaring them on.
It will be interesting to see how Newcastle react, yes they have been in good form but they have also had a decent fixture list and they will have stern tests coming up after this game too, so we will back the home side to get all three points.
