Southampton vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Friday 6th November 2020
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton come into this Friday night game as the most in-form team currently in the Premier League. The Saints have picked up 13 points from their last 15 which has seen them surge up to 5th place and are now just 3 points behind league leaders Liverpool.

Last weekend Southampton beat Aston Villa 4-3 in a thriller, which saw some superb goals by James Ward-Prowse as they went 4-0 up within the hour. Villa hit back in injury time but it was too little too late. This win over Villa who had started the season well followed victory over Everton who were then unbeaten and the Saints have been seriously impressive this past month.

At home Southampton have won 66% of their games with their last two being wins and ending in the same score line of 2-0. They have lost once so far, which was against Tottenham with that match ending in a 5-2 defeat.

Newcastle come into this encounter in 11th place and they have 11 points. A win would see them pass their hosts though and easily move into the top 10. One has to be reminded that the gap between 3rd and 11th is only three points.

The Magpies have been in decent form with just one defeat from their last 5 matches. Last weekend they beat Everton 2-1 at home and their only recent blemish was losing 4-1 against Manchester United. On the road Steve Bruce’s side are actually undefeated with one win and two draws. They have conceded 2 goals away from home, which is the 2nd best record in the league.

Team News:

Southampton: Danny Ings will be out for between 4-6 weeks with a knee injury. Jan Bednarek is 50/50 for this game after suffering concussion in the game v Aston Villa but he is back in training. Ryan Bertrand has a hamstring injury and could be out for a couple of weeks. Jake Vokins is a major doubt for this game with a knee injury.

Newcastle: Matthew Longstaff could return after being delayed by a few weeks because of a lack of match fitness. The Magpies have no new injury concerns but have some longer term injuries in the form of Dwight Gayle, Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie.

Southampton vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 1-0 to Newcastle.

Newcastle have won the last 3 league meetings in a row.

Southampton have not beaten Newcastle since 2016.

There is an 80% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Southampton vs Newcastle Prediction:

Southampton will feel confident coming into this game but received a major blow with the news that striker Danny Ings will be missing for at least four weeks with his knee injury and in fact Ings had to undergo an operation. To add to that Newcastle have a terrific recent record over the Saints and they are in decent form themselves.

This will be the biggest trip that Newcastle have to make this season but they have enjoyed playing away from home and may be able to claim something here. There are just one or two worrying injuries for the home side and whilst James Ward-Prowse and Jannick Vestergaard have been superb in recent weeks there is no guarantee that either player can keep up their form. The temptation is to go for a home win but we could see a little surprise here so goals look a safer option.
