Match Preview:
Southampton’s draw against Wolves last weekend ended a 3 game winning run but the Saints are still in terrific form and haven’t tasted defeat in the league since September 20th when they lost 5-2 against Tottenham.
We have witnessed teams outside of the traditional top six make themselves known this season and that has included Leicester, Aston Villa and Everton. Southampton are another one of those and have been one of the most in form sides of the past four weeks.
The Saints come into this game in 5th place with 17 points and are just three shy of top position. They have won 11 points from their last 15 and at home they have won their last 3 in a row. Some critics will say that the club hasn’t been tested in those games but at the end of the day they beat Everton here when Carlo Ancelotti’s side were unbeaten at that time.
Manchester United continue to do well in Europe and smashed Istanbul 4-0 at home in the Champions League but in the Premier League the club have made a slow start. United are in 10th place and seven points behind league leaders Tottenham although they do have a game in hand. United have also won their last two games beating Everton and West Bromwich Albion.
The main problem for United has been in their performances though, they haven’t really put one in this season if you take out their European games, and even though the club seem to be hitting form once more there is a feeling that the Red Devils are going from week to week not really knowing what type of performance they will put in.
On the road Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team have performed better than at home and indeed despite a lot of the criticism being thrown their way the club have a 100% win rate from 3 games played. They have also scored 10 goals in that time and by and large have come away with some impressive results. Victories have included wins over Everton, Newcastle and Brighton.
Team News:
Southampton: Nathan Redmond is out for at least a week with his hamstring and is ruled out. William Smallbone is being pencilled in to return for this game after his thigh injury but will still need to be assessed. Danny Ings is not due back for another three weeks following his knee injury.
Manchester United: Paul Pogba is touch and go with an ankle injury and will face a late test. Victor Lindelof has a slight back problem and will need to be assessed. Marcos Rojo has recovered from injury but is having some fitness issues and is only 50/50 to make this match. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has a minor ankle issue and may be a doubt for this encounter.
Southampton vs Man Utd Head to Head:
Last season this match finished 1-1.
The clubs have drawn 3 of their last 4 league meetings.
It’s been 9 games since Southampton have recorded a win over Manchester United in the league going back to 2016.
The last 4 league matches has seen both teams to score.
Southampton vs Man Utd Prediction:
On the face of it Southampton has the team to beat Manchester United and the home side will have plenty of chances in front of goal.
However United no matter how slowly they have started have a real chance over the next couple of weeks to be a top 5 side again. They will have taken confidence in winning their last two league games and the result in midweek in the Champions League will only boost that.
This game really could go either way, and that's why we feels it's better to look into different markets. The last 4 times these two teams have met, both teams have been on the scoresheet, therefore that is one option we would recommend. Also it's hard to ignore Bruno Fernandes at the moment, whith decent value odds to get a goal.
Southampton vs Man Utd Betting Tips:
Both teams to score (Yes) at 1.66
Anytime goalscorer: Bruno Fernandes at 2.87
