England Premier League
Saturday 27th August 2022
Kick off at 12:30pm BST
Venue: St Mary's Stadium
Match Preview:
Southampton have started better than some were suggesting and come into this game in 11th place with four points. The Saints won their first game of the season with a 2-1 win over Leicester and beat Cambridge 3-0 in the Carabao Cup in the week, so with two wins in a row under their belt confidence will be good.
The Saints last game at home finished 2-2 against Leeds and Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were heading for defeat in that fixture after trailing by two goals. At this early stage they remain an unknown quantity but in the past few seasons have not always been easy to beat at home.
Manchester United silenced their critics on Monday evening by beating Liverpool 2-1 at Old Trafford and it was just the right result they needed at the right time. United had started the season poorly with defeats against Brighton and Brentford and one could feel the last team they would want to play is Liverpool. But the performance was almost alien to what we have witnessed over the last six months or so in that United played with passion, and attacked well. Marcus Rashford was a great example of a player rolling back the years with his pace and goal in that game. This victory the first of their season has taken the Red Devils into 14th place and above rivals Liverpool.
Team News:
Southampton: Romain Perraud has an on going leg injury and Valentino Livramento is out long term with a knee injury and is expected to miss the rest of this year.
Manchester United: The clubs only injury concern is with Victor Lindelof who has a thigh injury with no fixed return date.
Southampton vs Man Utd Head to Head:
Last season this fixture ended 1-1.
It’s been 14 games since Southampton beat Manchester United and they haven’t beaten the Red Devils at home in 19 years.
There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.
Southampton vs Man Utd Prediction:
All eyes will be on Manchester United here. You can’t raise your game because you played Liverpool an historic rival and settle back into medicore football and that will be the worry from sceptics. How do United set themselves up for this game and can manager Erik ten Hag make sure that the way his side played against Liverpool was not a one off. At the end of the day despite beating the Reds what stunned most observers was the way the club played, it was 200% better than what we have been witnessing and the players need to put that shift in week in and week out. It will also be interesting to see if Harry Maguire is reinstated after being dropped and what does the future hold for Cristiano Ronaldo at the club? Some of these questions will be answered here.
As for Southampton they come here with no pressure and will just try to play their game as the media will only really be focusing if United can keep it up. The Saints drew both games last season with them but overall have a very poor record and will be the underdogs even at home to get anything here. United are odds on but can be backed and you have to be looking at players like Rashford to be hungry and get on the score sheet again. Is this the new moment, the new chapter for United? Much will be revealed on Saturday lunch time but one would expect after the Liverpool victory that the club will have too much for the Saints.
