England Premier League
Friday 5th April 2019
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: St Mary's Stadium
Match Preview:
Liverpool slipped a point behind Manchester City in the league earlier in the week and so this match will feel like a cup final for them. Not many football games have been played on a Friday night despite the promise by the Premier League at the beginning of the season that there would be, so this game offers that opportunity.
Southampton have been in good form with 3 wins from their last 4 games with their last match ending in a 1-0 victory away to Brighton. In 16th position The Saints are just five points above the bottom three but they do have a game in hand against Cardiff in 18th, and while the club should be safe this season a win at home to Liverpool would virtually confirm that.
At home Southampton have earned 10 points from their last 15 and have beaten the likes of Tottenham at St Mary's, so there is no guarantee that this match will be easy for Liverpool. While the club have only won 4 matches at home the majority of these have been in the last few months and the clubs fortunes have changed since the sacking of Mark Hughes.
For Liverpool every game feels like a final and their last match, a win against Tottenham was a nervous game, which was only decided by an own goal in injury time.
But The Reds have been strong this season and their recent form is also good winning their last 3 games, only a draw against Everton has denied them of a clean sweep of 5 wins from their last 5. Many pundits are tipping Liverpool for the league title, citing that they have a slightly easier run in than Manchester City but as the league stands the ball is not in their court.
Away from home Liverpool have the best record in the league where they have won 10 from 16 games played. Howver recently they have been dropping points on the road and have drawn 3 of their last four matches.
Team News:
Southampton: Danny Ings is eligible to face his parent club Liverpool and so is ruled out of this game. Mario Lemina could return to the side after fitness issues. Shane Long is 50/50 after his groin injury. Jannik Vestergaard also has a groin injury.
Liverpool: Joseph Gomez is no longer injured but has some fitness issues and could miss this game. He is the only doubt for The Reds.
