England Premier League
Saturday 4th March 2023
Kick off at 5:30pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium
Match Preview:
Southampton have shown glimpses of promise in the last week but the Premier League takes no prisoners and they remain in last place with 18 points and are four points from safety. It’s still very close down there though and any club up to 13th could still be sucked into the relegation battle.
A few weeks ago the Saints properly stunned themselves as they won just their 5th game of the season with a 1-0 victory away to Chelsea. However it felt like business as usual last weekend as they went down by the same score line to fellow strugglers Leeds. What has been interesting is that so far the Saints away form has been better than at home and at St Mary’s they have won just six points from 33. It really has been a miserable time for the loyal fans who have witnessed just 10 goals, and it’s five losses in a row at home too. Could it really get any worse for the club? Well yes it can as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Grimsby and this has hardly been a great start for new manager Ruben Selles. In one sense staying in the cup could have been a distraction on their league status but losing out to Grimsby will surely just make confidence even worse.
Leicester have had good spells and encouraging ones but they have also had poor runs and that is why despite everything they are only six points in front of the Saints. Manager Brendan Rodgers is amongst the favourites to be sacked but for now the Foxes have stuck with him although they come into this game having lost their last two. But it really has been a yo yo season for the club as last month they won two games in a row and scored 8 goals past Aston Villa and Tottenham however they have had to face Manchester United and Arsenal since then and collected nothing from those games.
Team News:
Southampton: Che Adams has a knock and is expected to miss out once again. Juan Larios and Valentino Livramento are both out long term.
Leicester: James Maddison is being tipped to return after illness, Youri Tielemans has been dealt a blow and will miss the next 6 weeks at least with an ankle injury. Jonny Evans and Ryan Bertrand have recovered from injury but both are fitness doubts and could well miss out again.
Southampton vs Leicester Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 2-2.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Southampton won 2-1.
In the last 5 games Southampton has failed to beat Leicester when at home and we would have to go back to 2017 for their last victory at home.
Southampton vs Leicester Prediction:
It may sound cruel to still mention it but who can forget when Leicester destroyed Southampton 9-0 and it was at this ground back in 2019. There are goals in this Leicester side and whilst we don’t think they will score nearly that much that could make the Saints suffer here. Leicester were on the up before meeting two very difficult sides in Manchester United and Arsenal and perhaps we shouldn’t take those matches too seriously.
The Foxes have been poor this season make no doubt about it but they are facing a poorer side and have proven last month that they can despatch when they need too. We are going to back the away win here with good value to boot.
