Southampton vs Leicester: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 1st December 2021
Kick off at 7:30pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

A good recent run for Southampton has hit a wall as they come into this midweek clash. The Saints have lost their last two games which came against Norwich and Liverpool. The Liverpool defeat ended in a 4-0 battering this past weekend and that felt inevitable however the Norwich loss will probably still hurt.

The two losses have dropped the Saints back down to 15th with 14 points and at home is where the club have amounted their points with 9 of the 14 coming this way. The Saints will be happy to return home because recent form has been solid and they are unbeaten here in the last 3 games. The last game played at St Mary's ended in a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.

What has been curious about Southampton’s home record has been the goal situation. Currently they have scored just 5 goals and that is the equal lowest in the Premier League. However they have conceded just 4 and only Manchester City has a better record.

Leicester have had an out of sorts campaign so far but their win this past weekend would have been warmly welcomed. The Foxes were back on it as they smashed Watford 4-2 and the icing on the cake was that Jamie Vardy who had been a tad quiet in recent weeks scored a brace. Vardy now has 9 goals and only Mohamed Salah has scored more.

Leicester have climbed to 10th place and are 4 points ahead of their hosts. The win over Watford also ended a 3 game streak without victory so the feeling will be that Brendan Rodgers team will come into this game with a spring in their step.

On the road the Foxes have won 2, lost 2 and drawn 2 from their six games played but recent form has been good with no defeats in their last three games.

Team News:

Southampton: The club will be without Stuart Armstrong due to his calf injury, he is presently the only injured played for the Saints ahead of this game.

Leicester: Justin James has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness and is unlikely to be risked for this game but could return for this weekend. Ricardo Pereira has a hamstring injury and is ruled out and won’t return for at least another two weeks. Youri Tielemans is on the road to recovery, he won’t feature in this game but could be back in the squad for the weekend. An update on Wesley Fofana who suffered a leg break in pre-season suggests that he could return in 4-5 weeks for the club.

Southampton vs Leicester Head to Head:

The last time the teams met here in the league the game finished 1-1.

There is a 50% chance to see over 2.5 goals- although one of those recent games ended infamously 9-0 to Leicester.

It’s been 4 years since Southampton has managed to beat Leicester at home.

Southampton vs Leicester Prediction:

We are going to back Leicester to get the win in what should be a frantic and exciting end to end game with chances for both sides. Leicester have a very good record here and the win at the weekend would have been the perfect tonic for the club who may have been doubting themselves had they failed to beat Watford at the weekend.

Southampton shouldn’t worry too much about the Liverpool defeat and will want to bounce back but they will be up against a quality team who themselves should be higher up the league and know they have underperformed. But the away side should be walking away with the points in this midweek fixture.
