England Premier League
Saturday 30th April 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: St Mary's Stadium
Match Preview:
It’s 13th v 14th with these two teams having very similar seasons though the Saints have the two point advantage. Both sides still have the opportunity to finish in the top half of the table which would feel like a good achievement.
Southampton’s form has been very mixed of late and last weekend they drew 2-2 at Brighton, given that they were losing that game they would have taken the point in the end. But for the Saint’s they come into this game having won just one game from their last five. A win would push the club into the top half of the table at least for a few hours and at home results have been dominated by draws with seven so far. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side did win their last home game beating Arsenal with a narrow 1-0 victory but the club have lost 3 of their last four home games.
Crystal Palace will be safe this season but their campaign could still end with a spring in their step or on a negative note. Palace have had some real battles this season but they have not managed to win any of their last three games and their last victory came at the beginning of the month after beating Arsenal. Last Monday despite having the better chances the Eagles could only draw 0-0 at home against Leeds though that did end a two game losing run.
On the road it is just three wins for Palace so far and they have lost their last two away games against Leicester and Newcastle. It’s been almost two months since Patrick Vieira’s side won an away game.
Team News:
Southampton: Valentino Livramento has a serious knee injury that has not only ruled out his season but possibly the rest of the year, the Saints have no other injuries coming into this game.
Crystal Palace: Tyrick Mitchell has a slight knock and will be assessed. Luka Milivojevic is being tipped to return after a hamstring injury. Nathan Ferguson will be assessed again due to a lack of match fitness.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace Head to Head:
Last season Southampton won this fixture 3-1.
Crystal Palace has just 1 victory over Southampton from the last seven meetings.
There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
It’s been 16 years since we last witnessed a 0-0 between the sides.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace Prediction:
Crystal Palace have the threat of falling down league positions if Aston Villa win at the weekend and even though Palace will be safe this season they could still finish as low as 16th or even 17th and that would not represent a good season for the club and would feel that all of their hard work in the first part of the campaign was in vain. There is nothing between the teams but history at least recently favours Southampton and Palace’s record is not good.
We don’t expect to see a very lively game and possibly backing under 2.5 goals could be a good choice. It was good to see James Ward- Prowse score last weekend and the player is capable of scoring a few goals once he gets one and has scored a few against Palace too over the years. Being at home he will come forward more and he could be a good choice to get on the score sheet.
Both sides can be stubborn and shore up their defences and we expect this game to be more of a battle in midfield with it opening up more in the 2nd half.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace Betting Tips:
