Southampton vs Crystal Palace: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 30th January 2019
Kick off at 7.45pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

It’s 14th v 15th in what should be a very interesting game of football on Wednesday evening. Both sides are just hovering above the danger zone and both sides have 22 points. One team could go a long way to trying to secure their Premier League status with a win here.

Southampton come into this game on good form and have remained unbeaten in their last 3 games. This includes back to back wins over Leicester and Everton, two sides far ahead of them in the league.

But The Saints home record will need to improve where they have almost drawn half of their games at St Mary’s. They have just 1 win at home in their past 3 matches.

Crystal Palace got a superb result at the weekend against Tottenham to knock them out of the FA Cup and have been drawn against Doncaster in the last 16. Could Palace be a darkhorse for the cup?

Whilst the team are doing well in the cup their recent form in the league has suffered and they have lost 3 of their last 4 games including their last two matches in a row. Their last game was a defeat to Liverpool but they were able to scare Jurgen Klopp’s side a little when the match finished 4-3.

The Eagles have lost 7 of their 12 games away from home, but they have recorded some good results on the road including wins at Manchester City and Wolves.

Team News:

Southampton: Charlie Austin has a swollen ankle and is a doubt for this game. Ryan Bertrand will be assessed but has been struggling with fitness issues. Mario Lemina is almost certainly out of this game with a muscle injury

Crystal Palace: Alexander Sørloth has joined Gent on loan until the end of the season. Wayne Hennessey and Pape Souare are out with a muscle injury and shoulder injury respectively

Southampton vs Crystal Palace Head to Head:

Earlier this season Southampton went to Palace and won 2-0.

Last season this fixture ended 2-1 to Palace.

Southampton have won 6 games from the last 10 meetings.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace Prediction:

Since Southampton’s 3-1 loss against Manchester City they have looked like a different team and it is comendable that they haven’t just lay down. They followed that game up by drawing 0-0 with Chelsea and are on a good run of results in the league. James Ward-Prowse despite his position has been banging in the goals for The Saints lately so with the possible chance of Charlie Austin missing this game or at the very least not being match fit it seems like a no brainer to get on Ward-Prowse scoring again in midweek. Our prediction is that Southampton will get the win they need.
