England Premier League
Saturday 15th April 2023
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: St. Mary's Stadium
Match Preview:
Southampton are bottom of the Premier League and the signs are starting to show that they could be in real danger. In recent weeks one win would have got the Saints out of trouble but now one win would only move them up to 19th if Leicester lose at the weekend. The safety gap is 4 points but in reality it is 5 because of the Saint’s poor goal difference and they have to win this huge game.
Form as one could expect has been poor with just 2 points won from the last 15 and they have lost their last two games. The clubs last home game was a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City, it was a miserable loss but at the same time no one at the club would have thought it was a spectacular loss with the way they have been playing. The Saints have the worst home record in the league with just 10 points won from a possible 45 and with 28 goals conceded they are almost averaging two goals per home game being shipped.
Crystal Palace have new life under an old veteran in Roy Hodgson and the club has won its last two games under him. Palace are in 12th place and have 33 points and while they are not quite out of the woods one would feel that a win and draw could be enough to stay up if we take what the other clubs below them are earning on average. With Hodgson back the Eagles were able to beat Leicester 2-1 and then stunned Leeds, a direct rival in the bottom half struggle, winning 5-1 away from home and that was after being a goal down.
Team News:
Southampton: Che Adams is still missing with a calf injury, Romeo Lavia has a slight hamstring injury and will be assessed. Mohammed Salisu is out with a muscle injury.
Crystal Palace: Wilfried Zaha is sidelined with his groin and not expected back for another two weeks. Chris Richards will be assessed for a knock, Vicente Guaita is out for a couple of weeks with his calf. Odsonne Edouard will be assessed for a knock as will Nathan Ferguson.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace Head to Head:
Last season Crystal Palace won this fixture 2-1.
There is a 60% chance to see both teams to score.
There hasn’t been a 0-0 between the clubs in 17 years.
Southampton vs Crystal Palace Prediction:
Southampton are 10 points behind their visitors and if they are to survive this season they will need to start winning their home games at least, that could give them a chance. However there is a problem for the Saints and that is they are coming up against a very confident Palace side and every player seems overjoyed to have Hodgson back and there has been a terrific response. Indeed Hodgson would have welcomed that his team were trailing against Leeds to see their mental attitude and they passed with flying colours.
There are some question marks over Palace because they may be carrying some key injuries and the Saints will have to fight but it is hard to go against the club in form and of course Palace are not out of the woods just yet and need the three points too.
