Southampton are slipping ever nearer to a relegation dog fight but they could be given a lot of credit for last weekend’s game which ended in defeat at the hands of Arsenal. The Saints opened the scoring at the Emirates and with less than ten minutes to go the match was locked at 2-2. However lapses in concentration meant that Arsenal went on to win the game 3-2 but Southampton did not play like a team who could be mixing it with Championship teams next season. The question is did they take any positives from the game?
The loss to Arsenal means that the Saints have lost 3 games in a row and have fallen 3 points behind safety, a win here is needed. The problem is that they have the 2nd to worst home record in the league and have won just 3 times here this season.
Chelsea may have the stronger team and be favourites to win this game but we have to be reminded that the club are going through poor form which has seen their Champions League top 4 place wiped out. They are a massive 10 points behind Tottenham now after winning just 1 league game in their last five.
