Southampton vs Brighton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 14th March 2021
Kick off at 12noon GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton have been the poorest side in the Premier League over the past 10 games and in midweek they lost their 13th match of the season going down 5-2 at Manchester City. That is a result that will not concern the club too greatly, though getting beat heavy again is hardly ideal.

What will be of concern is that the Saints are only 7 points from the bottom three, and whilst there is a feeling they will be fine this season they have already shown how they can go on a poor run that could get them into trouble. This is a huge game for the club and victory here means they could potentially create a good gap between possible relegation and surviving.

In fairness to Southampton this game represents their first home match in 4 games and the unlucky way that the fixtures have fallen means that this game is their first home match since drawing 1-1 with Chelsea almost a month ago.

Brighton are in real danger of going down. They come into this game in 17th place with 26 points the same as 18th placed Fulham with just goal difference being the actual difference between the teams. Graham Potter’s side are in poor form and have lost their last 3 games. From their 26 points so far, 16 have actually come away from home with their last victory coming at all clubs, Liverpool. But don’t let that win fool you, in their last away game they lost at West Bromwich Albion.

Team News:

Southampton: Moussa Djenepo is being tipped to return for this game after his groin injury. Danny Ings is out with a muscle injury, Oriol Romeu has been ruled out for the season with his ankle injury.

Brighton: Aaron Connolly is out for a few weeks with his rib injury. Tariq Lamptey has been ruled out for the rest of the season with his hamstring. Solly March has also been ruled out for the rest of the season with his knee. Adam Webster is set to miss the next few weeks with an ankle injury.

Southampton vs Brighton Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 1-1.

Earlier in the season Southampton won at Brighton 2-1.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Southampton vs Brighton Prediction:

Southampton have been on a poor run with the odd speed bump in-between but we think they can put in a good performance at the weekend. There have been hints at that. They lost heavy to Manchester City in midweek but still scored 2 goals and that can be important for some players. They have also had the bad luck of having to play 4 games in a row away from home. The bottom line is that Southampton have better players than Brighton and there are a few goals in this side when they click.

If the Saints can finish the season like they started it they can power on and have a decent end to the season, and they can start that objective right now against a Brighton side who look nervous and low on confidence.
