Match Preview:
Of course there is no love lost between these two historic sides and now they will face each other knowing that it can affect survival at least for Southampton in the Premier League. Southampton look in trouble but a strong finish could still see them survive relegation and certainly the players will be fighting for everything. That was in evidence last Friday when they came so close to beating Arsenal but still drew away to the league leaders 3-3. It was a pulsating game that underlined just why the Premier League is so popular, how the side in bottom place can come away from home and face the league leaders and give them a game. In the end the Saints walked away with 1 point but after being 3-1 up with two minutes to go at the Emirates it would have felt like a defeat and they really needed the win.
So this job at home to Bournemouth should be simple on paper- this is a game they need to win and the thoughts of everyone associated with the club will be if we can almost break Arsenal surely we can win this game if we play with the same passion, we will see. The Saints are 6 points from safety because of goal difference and with just 18 points left on the board their relegation seems inevitable if they don’t win here. The good news is that this is a game in hand over 17th placed Leicester, the bad news is that the Saints are in poor form with just 2 points from their last 15 and only 9 goals scored from their last 10 games.
Bournemouth looked like being one of the teams to be relegated a month ago but their form has picked up with 3 wins from their last five although there have been recent defeats against Brighton and last weekend they were literally hammered 4-0 by West Ham at home. That was a bad result for the Cherries but they will feel with 33 points and with six games to go that they are on the path to survival. They are not there quite yet but their position at this current time is good.
Team News:
Southampton: Jan Bednarek has a head injury and hasn’t been ruled out but we must presume with such an injury that he could miss out for this one. Mohamed Salisu, Valentino Livramento and Juan Larios remain out long term.
Bournemouth: Hamed Traore looks set to miss out again with a knock, Jack Stephens cannot face his parent club. Ryan Fredericks and Junior Stanilas look set to both remain sidelined with a respective calf injury and knock.

The last time the teams played each other in this fixture was back in 2019 and Bournemouth won 3-1.
Earlier this season in the reverse fixture Southampton won 1-0 and the Saints have won the last 3 meetings in a row.
Southampton vs Bournemouth Prediction:
There will be a lot of pressure on the home side to come out and win but at the same time surely that pressure was more intensified away to Arsenal where quite frankly they were expected to not just lose but ship in 4 or 5 goals too. It was a real shock that they were able to go to a team who are hoping to be champions and take 2 points from them. This then is all about how the team sets up, not so much tactically but mentally. We have to believe that the Saints need to go down fighting if that is to be the case and that means at least picking up points at home especially against teams that are down there too. Perhaps the fact that the Cherries could lose this game and still feel that their survival is not in jeopardy could be a key factor, they will also be feeling the negative vibes from losing 4-0 against West Ham yet another team down there and fighting for survival.
