Southampton vs Aston Villa: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 30th January 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Now this should be a tasty game as the two surprise teams of this campaign do battle on Saturday evening.

Southampton have slipped down to 11th place but with 29 points they are only six from a European finish and overall have been very solid this season. They have recently knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup and won 8 of their 19 games so far. However the Saints have lost their last 2 games against Leicester and Arsenal in the league and won’t want to let all that hard work in the first half of the season get undone.

The Saints have won 50% of their games at home but a worrying trend has seen the club only win one game from their past four. They did recently beat Liverpool though and gave Arsenal a good game before succumbing to a 3-1 loss.

Aston Villa are 10th and on the same points but they have a game in hand over their hosts and two extra games against the majority of the top 9 clubs. Villa still have a chance to launch a bid for a European place however form has not been good. Dean Smith’s side have lost 3 of their last four games and even had their manager sent off when they lost against Manchester City.

Villa’s overall away form is decent having won 50% of their games but their recent form on the road is poor and they haven’t won in 4 games and that includes losing their last 3 in a row.

Team News:

Southampton: Kyle Walker-Peters looks like he will miss another game due to his calf injury. William Smallbone, Oriol Romeu, Michael Obafemi are all longer term injuries and Jannick Vestergaard won’t be back until February.

Aston Villa: Kortney Hause has a foot injury and is ruled out, Wesley is long term with his knee.

Southampton vs Aston Villa Head to Head:

Last season Southampton won 2-0.

Earlier in the season the clubs were involved in a seven goal thriller which ended 4-3 to Southampton.

Southampton have won the last 4 meetings between the teams in a row.

Southampton vs Aston Villa Prediction:

There will be plenty of chances for both sides to win this game and we should expect an open game. Southampton get the chance to remain at home for the 3rd game in a row in all competitions and they will try to take advantage of that.

The worry is that some injuries are mounting up for the side and Villa will not be easy opposition. We do expect to see goals and this could be a close game that ends in a score draw, that is a risky take so we will look at the goals market as this seems to be where the best value is to be found here for this game. Like the league table suggests there is really nothing between the two teams.

Southampton vs Aston Villa Betting Tips:

Over 2.5 goals at 1.67

Both teams to score at 1.57

Correct Score: 2-2 at 11.00
