Southampton vs Aston Villa: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Friday 5th November 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Match day 11 in the Premier League will kick off with Aston Villa’s visit to the coast on Friday evening.

The Saints are in 14th place and have had a mixed start to the season although come into this game in good form and have gone their last 3 games unbeaten. That includes two victories, which have come against Watford and Leeds. The club could move up 3-4 places with victory here and their last home game finished in a battling 2-2 draw with Burnley.

The Saints evidently need to win more games and they have just two wins so far but aforementioned recent form has seen a real turnaround, though the majority of the clubs results have been draws, which stands at 50% of their overall results.

Aston Villa are in 15th position and with 10 points are one behind their hosts. Unlike Southampton though Villa come into this game in dreadful form and there is a whole big pile of pressure on manager Dean Smith. Villa have lost 4 in a row. The clubs last 2 games have seen them conceding 7 goals against West Ham and Arsenal and the London curse first struck a few weeks before that with defeat against Tottenham. But shipping 4 goals at home to West Ham last weekend would have been of great concern even if the Hammers are on form.

The pressure for Smith is certainly on as we’ve seen some heads roll now in the Premier League. Villa have spent money over the past 12 months and despite losing Jack Grealish were expected to push for European football this season. But the club are already six points behind that target. Time is still on their side but they need to turnaround the form first. Villa have so far lost 60% of their games.

Team News:

Southampton: There are no new injuries for the Saints, though Jack Stephens with his long term knee injury misses out again and isn’t due back for another month.

Aston Villa: Douglas Luiz is out due to a muscle injury, Danny Ings is out because of the same injury also. Ezri Konsa Ngoyo is suspended for this game after his sending off last weekend. Bertrand Traore is still out with his thigh and Trezeguet is a long term injury with his knee.

Southampton vs Aston Villa Head to Head:

Last season Aston Villa won this match 1-0, prior to that the Saints had won 4 encounters in a row.

There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.

There has only been one 0-0 result in the last 21 matches.

Southampton vs Aston Villa Prediction:

Southampton have looked more daring in recent weeks and it is paying off well. Of course they have their limitations but this is the type of fixture they should be expected to win at this stage of the season.

The Saints have a good record over Villa and are in better form and if we couple that together with the poor form and some key injuries to this Villa side this is really feeling like a solid home victory.

The value on the game is excellent as the bookmakers do not see much difference between the sides but on current form there seems to be a gulf. Villa should pick up at some point but it is questionable their luck will change away from home on a Friday evening. We will back Che Adams to score for the home side who has looked sharp once again, so we should follow him.
