Southampton vs Arsenal: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 23rd October 2022
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

Southampton are in 14th place and while their start to the season hasn’t been anything to get excited about the club look stable for now and have also ended a poor recent run by going their last two games undefeated. First they drew 1-1 with West Ham after taking the lead and then in midweek they beat Bournemouth 1-0 away from home. The win over the Cherries was impressive given Bournemouth’s recent form.

The Saints return back home where they have one of the worst records in the Premier League with just 5 points earned from a possible 15. It’s just one win at home and ironically that came against Chelsea, they have lost to Everton and Manchester United here and their last game was the draw against West Ham. It could be argued that the club have had some tough games at home already and that doesn’t get any easier on Sunday when they will entertain the league leaders.

Arsenal had a brilliant midweek and didn’t even kick a ball, well not in the Premier League anyway. Because they had a European game with PSV on Thursday which they won 1-0 it meant that they couldn’t fulfill what would have been a mouthwatering clash against Manchester City, so that game had to be postponed. In the mean time Tottenham lost and Chelsea drew and this was advantage to the Gunners.

Coming into this weekend, which will be Arsenal’s 11th of the season they have a 4 point gap over 2nd placed Manchester City, although that could be reduced to just one if City do the business against Brighton on Saturday. On the road Mikel Arteta’s side have won 4 of their 5 games so far with 10 goals scored and only 3 conceded and they were all in the same game when they lost to Manchester United.

Team News:

Southampton: Romeo Lavia was due back for this game but has fitness issues and it may have come too soon for him. He will be assessed. Ainsley Maitland-Niles cannot face his parent club, Kyle Walker-Peters is out with his hamstring which could be long term.

Arsenal: Bukayo Saka has a slight knock but is being tipped to be fine for this game. Oleksandr Zinchenko is only 50/50 to make this game due to recovering from a calf injury and will be assessed. Emile Smith-Rowe is out until the end of the year with a groin injury.

Southampton vs Arsenal Head to Head:

Southampton won this fixture last season 1-0.

There is a pattern that has repeated for the last 4 years when Southampton are at home that they win one and lose one. If this continues they will lose this game.

4 of the last six meetings have finished in under 2.5 goals.

Southampton vs Arsenal Prediction:

Even though Arsenal have actually lost a game this season it feels as if they haven’t. They have been flawless since the Manchester United defeat and won 4 games in a row since then, as if when on a run they tripped up slightly without anyone knowing and continued on their merry way. But they have been like a machine and will start as the odds on favourites to make it 10 wins so far. And here is a fact, Arsenal are the only side in the league not to have drawn a game so far and it is paying dividends currently.

Southampton can be a solid side at home and they have their chances and maybe look at how Leeds pushed Arsenal in the last away game. But we expect the Gunners to have too much in the tank and find a way to win here, in what should be a professional and well maintained victory. They are just one win from hitting the 30 point mark and that should be achieved on Sunday.
