Southampton vs Arsenal: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 16th April 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: St Mary's Stadium

Match Preview:

The last time Southampton faced a London team at home they lost 6-0 and of course that was only last weekend when Chelsea came to visit. There will be caution at the club then who have in recent weeks looked like they are already on holiday.

Form for Southampton is poor with 4 defeats from their last five and only 1 point earned from their last 15 on offer. They are 12 points clear of the bottom three and will be safe this season and that is part of the problem that the players will feel they have already done their job, and of course there is no chance to qualify for Europe. But fans do not want to see games where their club are getting slaughtered and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be demanding to see a response from his players.

Have Arsenal blown 4th place? The Gunners have chosen the absolute wrong time to hit bad form but here we are and that is the reality of the situation as they come into this game having lost 3 of their last four. But there is still everything to play for and even though Arsenal are 3 points behind 4th placed Tottenham they do have a game in hand. Last weekend Arsenal lost their 2nd game in a row and this one felt like a shock as they were defeated 2-1 at home to Brighton a club who like Southampton have very little to play for.

The Gunners last away game ended in a 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace before then Arsenal had managed to win four games in a row away from home. For Arsenal they have only drawn one game on the road so far, so have 7 wins but six defeats.

Team News:

Southampton: There are no injuries for the club ahead of this game

Arsenal: Alexandre Lacazette has been out because of personal reasons, it is unknown if he will be back for this game but at this time remains a doubt. Takehiro Tomiyasu has a calf injury and although he hasn’t been officially ruled out for this game he looks likely not to return until next week. Thomas Partey is out with his thigh and looks like he will miss the rest of the month. Kieran Tierney looks likely to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Southampton vs Arsenal Head to Head:

Last season Arsenal won this fixture 3-1.

From the last seven meetings Southampton has just one victory.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Arsenal won 3-0.

Southampton vs Arsenal Prediction:

Arsenal are becoming a risky team to back lately but we have to look at their current form like it is a wobble. Maybe that is a stretch and Arsenal will finish the season badly but everything is still there for the club to achieve. They have the added bonus too of denying their rivals Tottenham a Champions League place and we have to remember that the clubs recent overall form on the road has been very good.

Southampton’s players should have been woken up by their latest defeat and we should see a more assured performance from the Saints it is why backing both teams to score could be a shrewd pick especially when this current Arsenal side possess much more quality than the home team. Arsenal should bounce back but we feel it's safer to focus on goals markets for this one. Also worth backing is Martin Odegaard who has been a very good player for Mikel Arteta’s side this season and is scoring a few goals lately, he is great value to score again.

Southampton vs Arsenal Betting Tips:
