England Premier League
Tuesday 26th December 2023
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Bramall Lane
Match Preview:
This bottom three clash will be quite an intense game and it promises to be the type of match that could tell us a lot about these two teams going forward. For now both clubs are amongst the favourites to be relegated but perhaps one of these teams can also escape relegation. Sheffield United at home will be the slight favourites to win and there has been a notable improvement under returning manager Chris Wilder. He has managed to pick up 4 points from 12 on offer which isn’t a great return but is still almost the same number of points the club had managed since August.
At the weekend the Blades were so close to a famous victory as they led Aston Villa 1-0 away from home in the 97th minute. Up to that point Villa had won every game at home and they equalised. However as the dust settled this was still a good result for Wilder’s side who had become the first team to take points from Unai Emery’s side at Villa Park. The Blades are bottom but now have 9 points and depending on how Burnley do if they were to win here they would be lifted off the bottom place and also join Luton on 12 points. At home Sheffield United have lost six games and only won twice but those wins have come in their last four games.
Luton pulled off a fantastic result at the weekend as they beat Newcastle 1-0 at home in a great and joyous atmosphere. They now have 12 points and are just 2 points shy of escaping the bottom three. The only problem for them is that the two clubs below also picked up points. Recent form has not been good for Luton but the victory will be welcomed as they try to navigate themselves out of the relegation zone. Away from home the Hatters have only been able to pick up 4 points from a possible 24 and their last away game ended in a 3-1 defeat against Brentford.
Team News:
Sheffield United: Jayden Bogle is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. Ariel Ahmedhodzic will be assessed after picking up a knock. Rhian Brewster is 50/50 to return due to a lack of match fitness; it is the same situation with Rhys Norrington-Davies. The following players remain out long term; Chris Basham, Daniel Jebbison, John Egan, Chris Basham and Tom Davies
Luton: Reece Burke is just 50/50 to return with an ongoing hamstring injury, Daniel Potts remains out with the same injury and has no fixed return date, these are the only injury concerns for the club ahead of this game
Sheffield Utd vs Luton Head to Head:
Last season when the clubs played each other in the Championship Luton won 1-0 in this fixture.
Sheffield United have managed just one victory in the past five meetings.
The last 5 meetings have all seen under 2.5 goals.
Sheffield Utd vs Luton Prediction:
In the end it could be just one goal that settles this game and given that this is a bottom three clash as we approach the half way stage of the season it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a cautious game. Luton will have some confidence after the win over Newcastle but are simply not the same side on their travels but they have recorded some decent results over the Blades in recent years.
At home we expect Wilder to be rallying his players, he needs to pick them up after the Aston Villa draw and convince his players that it was still a good result. This is an important game for the club who could really start to lose ground if they were to lose here, but we can see them narrowly getting the win they need.
