Sheffield Utd vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 28th February 2021
Kick off at 7:15pm GMT
Venue: Bramall Lane

Match Preview:

The bottom club will face the champions and on paper this should be an easy away win but as everyone knows Liverpool have not been themselves in 2021, and this could be another possible upset.

Sheffield United have shown some fight in their games despite where they are but it looks almost certain that they will be heading back to the Championship come May. The Blades have 11 points and are 14 points from safety, and last weekend they lost their 20th game of the season, this time to Fulham.

At home it has been just two wins for Chris Wilder’s side though those have both happened this year. They scared Chelsea for a moment in their last home game before losing that one 2-1. If West Bromwich Albion lose this weekend, Sheffield United would go 19th with a surprise win here.

Liverpool lost 2-0 last weekend against Everton and of all their recent defeats this one clearly would have hurt the most. It was the first time that the Reds had lost to their city rivals in 11 years and the first time it had happened at Anfield since 1999. Liverpool were clearly the second best team and they have lost 4 consecutive games coming into this one.

No one could see the collapse happening the way it has and it means Liverpool have to be ruled out of defending their title now. The Reds have fallen 19 points behind league leaders Manchester City. In fact the goal now is to try and finish in the top 4, currently the Reds are 5 points from that target. The gap doesn’t seem big but the way they have been playing suggests it is.

On form Liverpool would be 19th which is quite stunning given the dominance of the club over the past 2 seasons. Away from home Liverpool’s most common result has been the draw which has happened 5 times from 12 games. Liverpool lost their last away game against Leicester by 3-1 and they were leading that encounter.

Team News:

Sheffield United: Chris Basham is the clubs latest injury and he has a hamstring and will miss at least the next 4 weeks. Jayden Bogle has a knock and he has been ruled out for the next two weeks. John Egan is out until at least April with his toe injury, Jack Robinson and Jack O’ Connell are longer term absentees.

Liverpool: James Milner will be assessed for fitness issues ahead of this game. Jordan Henderson has a groin injury and is expected to miss the next 3-4 weeks. Fabinho will face a late test on his fitness and is 50/50.

Sheffield Utd vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 1-0.

The clubs have only played each other four times in the past 13 years and Liverpool has won every game,.

In the reverse fixture earlier in the season Liverpool won 2-1.

Sheffield Utd vs Liverpool Prediction:

The temptation is of course to go for Liverpool but at odds of 1.30 one has to wonder what type of value does that offer? However we can increase those odds to 1.575 with no extra risk with a "-1 asian handicap", so that is what we will do, as surely Liverpool will get 3 points in this game, wont they? The bottom line is that the quality that Liverpool have on the pitch far surpasses the Blades. Things are getting serious for Liverpool now for a top 4 spot and we need to see a reaction from them.

Mohamed Salah also looks a good option to get a goal, and this is a game which you would think should contain a fair few goals.

Sheffield Utd vs Liverpool Betting Tips:

Asian handicap (-1 Liverpool) at 1.575

Anytime goalscorer (Mohamed Salah) at 1.60
