Sheffield Utd vs Brighton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 18th February 2024
Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: Bramall Lane

Match Preview:

Sheffield United have to win their home games to give themselves what would be a miracle of a chance to stay in the Premier League. The Blades are not only bottom of the league but 7 points from safety and they look like being one of the sides to go down. However last weekend the club pulled off a terrific result beating the in-form Luton 3-1 away from home and that has given them 13 points. With Burnley losing on Saturday Chris Wilder’s side would go into 19th even with a draw and try to draw closer to 18th placed side Everton. All is to play for.

Sheffield United has the second to worst home record though with just 2 wins from 12 games played however they have managed to pick up 4 points from their past four home games, still not good enough but a little improvement. Brighton come into this game in 9th place and they are not in the best form having lost two of their last three games and just one taste of victory in their last five games. With both Newcastle and West Ham dropping points on Saturday Brighton could move past both clubs so this game does present itself with a unique opportunity for the Seagulls to start flying high again. Brighton’s last game ended in a 2-1 away loss to Tottenham and on the road so far Roberto Di Zerbi’s side have been poor with 50% of games lost and just 2 points won from their past 15 on offer. Brighton still has a very good chance of qualifying for European football next season but that will take a hit with defeat here.

Team News:

Sheffield United: Ben Brereton and Gustavo Hamer will both be assessed and have a chance to return back to the first team squad. George Baldock is just a 50/50 chance to return following his muscle injury, Chirs Basham and John Egan remain out long term with respective leg injuries. Rhys Norrington-Davies will miss out with a hamstring injury and Olivier McBurnie will be assessed following a recent calf injury but he is being tipped to return.

Brighton: Julio Enciso is still a week away from a return with a knee injury, Jack Hinshelwood has a foot injury and is a major doubt for this game. Joao Pedro, Soloman March and James Milner all remain out.

Sheffield Utd vs Brighton Head to Head:

In the league the teams last here in 2021 and Sheffield United won 1-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the clubs drew 1-1.

There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.

Sheffield Utd vs Brighton Prediction:

What is interesting is that the two teams did actually meet here only last month in the FA Cup and Brighton turned on the expected style, running out 5-2 winners but we shouldn’t look too closely into that result. Time and again we have seen from historic FA Cup games that teams in the bottom three do not always put out their best sides and have one eye on trying to survive in the league, fantasy would be deep cup runs are not on the agenda’s of Premier League managers in this age when so much revenue loss is at stake by being relegated. Indeed results between the clubs have been fairly close and we expect this match to follow that trend and would not be surprised to see points shared.
