England Premier League
Sunday 21st January 2024
Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: Bramall Lane
Match Preview:
Sheffield United begin their new year in the Premier League rooted to the bottom and with 9 points the Blades are 9 points from safety because of their goal difference. The wheels already seem to be coming off the Chris Wilder project with just 1 point won from their last 12. The club have had some difficult games recently including having to play Manchester City, Aston Villa and Chelsea but it doesn’t bode well that they lost at home to Luton in this period of play.
It’s quite simple at least on paper what the club need to do and that is to start winning games and at home they have at least managed this two times from their last five games with wins over Brentford and Wolves. However with seven points won from 10 home games the club has the second to worst home record in the league. There were some positives to take in the FA Cup though as Wilder’s side thrashed Gillingham away from home 4-0.
West Ham are coming into this game having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Bristol City losing 1-0 after a replay. This is undoubtedly a poor result for the Hammers but the club will want to get back on track in the league and they come into this fixture unbeaten in their last four games. The Hammers last match finished in a 0-0 draw at home to Brighton but they have won their previous 3 games in a row with victories over Arsenal, Manchester United and Wolves. David Moyes' side are in 6th place but cannot move up the table given that 5th placed Tottenham are 6 points clear. Away from home West Ham have won 50% of their games with 3 wins coming from their last four.
Team News:
Sheffield United: Tom Davies is training again after a lengthy spell out with his thigh but only remains 50/50 to be ready for this game. Anis Ben Slimane and Yasser Larouci are on international duty. John Egan, Daniel Jebbison and Chris Basham are all out long term with no fixed return date.
West Ham: Nayef Aguerd and Mohammed Kudus are on international duty. Said Benrahma is suspended for a straight red card and is not due back until mid February. Jarrod Bowen has an ankle injury and is only 50/50 to make this game, there is a suggestion he could miss the next 2-3 weeks. Lucas Paqueta is a major doubt with an ongoing calf injury.Michail Antonio could be assessed with a knee injury but it isn’t sure that he will be risked after suffering a slight setback.
Sheff Utd vs West Ham Head to Head:
The teams last played here 3 years ago and West Ham won 1-0.
West Ham have won the last 3 meetings in a row.
There is an 80% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
Sheff Utd vs West Ham Prediction:
With the quality that West Ham possess up front this would have been an easy call- an away victory, however the Hammers have many key players missing for this trip. This is a great chance for Sheffield United to start off the new year with a win as they face a depleted Hammers side at home. Manager Chris Wilder will need to install that belief that he was able to do so when he returned because if his team put in a shift there are certainly three points available at the weekend.
Sheffield United are great value to win this game and we will take the home side but cover the draw also. Also the under goal market is worth backing, as this should be a tight game. With a lack of quality attacking options expect Moyes to head into this game with defence and a point on his mind.
Sheff Utd vs West Ham Betting Tips:
Double chance (Sheffield United or draw) at 1.72
Anytime goalscorer: Olivier McBurnie at 3.25
