Norwich vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Friday 19th June 2020
Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: Carrow Road

Match Preview:

There are two Friday night Premier League games following the restart and the first of these will be the clash at Carrow Road when Norwich take on Southampton.

Norwich who are bottom of the league are the heavy odds on favourites to be relegated this season, but one has to wonder if the break for the pandemic may just work in the clubs favour after all they have had 3 months to reflect on their situation.

The Canaries are 6 points from safety and at the end of the day there are 27 points still left to play for. It would be an almighty challenge for the side and for it to work they would have to win this game, lose it and we could possibly see their collapse continuing much like before. The club have won just once in their last five games.

As for Southampton they are in 14th place and 7 points clear of the bottom three, they should be fine to stay up this season, however their form must improve given that they have lost 4 of their last five matches.

Saints manager Ralph Hassenhuttl has just signed a new 4 year deal with the club and this is significant for two reasons. It means that the players know their manager isn’t going somewhere in the summer, so there are places to play for. As for the manager he will give more known that the club owners are more than pleased with his work so far. At this current time then a new contract is a win-win for everyone concerned.

Team News:

Norwich: Grant Hanley has a hamstring and is expected to miss the rest of the season, other than Hanley much of the team is without major injury concern

Southampton: Moussa Djenepo is suspended for this game, part of his 3 game ban running over since March.

Norwich vs Southampton Head to Head:

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Southampton beat Norwich 2-1.

In any competition Southampton have not won away at Norwich since 2010.

The last time the teams played here was in 2017 when the game finished 2-2.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Norwich vs Southampton Prediction:

It is worth noting before the pandemic paused the league, Southampton had the 6th best away record which included 6 wins from 14 games. Norwich had lost 50% of their home games when fans were in attendance so it will be interesting to see if no fans means that the players will have more freedom on the ball.

Daniel Farke has certainly benefited from the break as Norwich had an injury crisis on their hands, and now they are almost injury free. However we feel Southampton will be able to take something back from this away fixture, and it's always worth considering Danny Ings getting on the scoresheet at odds of nearly 2.00.
