Newcastle vs Wolves: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 27th February 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Newcastle are under pressure as Fulham in 18th have closed the gap to just 3 points. The Magpies come into this weekend fixture having lost their last two games, which came against Chelsea and Manchester United and Steve Bruce may feel that the club have simply had some difficult fixtures of late.

Newcastle can point to the fact that they have beaten quality teams such as Everton and Southampton recently and being at home they will try to get all three points. Home form is hardly encouraging for Newcastle though who have lost 50% of their games so far and won just once in their last five games. However that victory was obtained the last time they were at St. James'.

Wolves have climbed up to 12th after a poor start to the year and now they are a team in form having picked up 10 points from their last four games they also come here with back to back wins. Their last game ended in a 1-0 victory over Leeds and in recent games they have beaten Arsenal and held Leicester to a draw.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side could go above Arsenal and Leeds with a win but on the road the club have just 4 wins and have lost half of their games. Wolves won their last away game beating Southampton 2-1 but had gone the previous four games without winning any. The club are not scoring many goals away from home either with just 11 so far, that is the same amount that 19th placed West Bromwich Albion have.

Team News:

Newcastle: Fernandez is aiming to be back for this game after a lack of match fitness. Joelinton has a back injury though there is no update it isn’t thought to be serious. Javier Manquilli, Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson are out long term.

Wolves: Willy Boly will be assessed after his hamstring injury but remains a doubt. Marcal could return after his slight knock, as could Daniel Podence. Raul Jimenez is training again but there have been no updates on his return after his head injury earlier in the season.

Newcastle vs Wolves Head to Head:

The last 4 league meetings have all ended with the correct score of 1-1.

In their Premier League meetings the clubs have both scored against one another in the last 9 games in a row.

In the league Newcastle have not beaten Wolves at home since 2011 although the club did beat them in the league cup in 2016.

Newcastle vs Wolves Prediction:

This is an open fixture and because of this the value lies with the away team. We have two equal sides on their day that can beat each other but you have to wonder about Newcastle and where the goals will come from on a regular basis. Wolves could be welcoming back key players and Daniel Podence has been a real star for the club this season.

There is no pressure on Wolves coming into this game but Newcastle are really feeling the heat now and they have proven to be the type of club who can go on long losing runs. Of course this could be a much closer game than expected and caution first, but we will opt for the away result in this game but with the draw covered. Wolves simply have more players that can cause damage up front and overall Newcastle haven’t been convincing enough at home.
