Newcastle vs Wolves: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Friday 8th April 2022
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

The Friday night game will give Newcastle the opportunity to get back to winning ways and pick up three much needed points as they return home for the first time in a month. The Magpies revival which has seen them go two months unbeaten has been quashed and they come into this game having lost their last 3. Last weekend was the worst result and display from Eddie Howe’s side as they were crushed 5-1 against Tottenham.

With 31 points and in 15th place the Magpies look good for survival but are clearly not out of the woods just yet. Victory here would see them go ahead of Brentford with the same games played and would probably rubber stamp their survival in the league for this season. At home Howe’s team have only won four games however 3 of those have been in their last three home matches and they are unbeaten this year at St James’ Park. The clubs last home game finished in a 2-1 win over Brighton.

Wolves are in 8th place and are chasing a European finish. A surprise top 4 finish seems a stretch but a Europa League place does not. Consistency until the end of the season will surely reward Bruno Lage’s side and they have shown that recently with 3 wins from their last four games. Last weekend Wolves beat Aston Villa 2-1 and victory here would see them move into 6th place albeit their direct rivals will play at the weekend and have games in hand over them.

Away form has been solid with 9 points from their last 15 and the club won their last game on the road beating Everton 1-0. Wolves actually have a better record away from home this season and have the 4th best away record in the league with 26 points from a possible 45.

Team News:

Newcastle: Kieran Trippier remains out with a foot injury with no fixed date on his return although he is being tipped to play some part in this season. Callum Wilson may return in 3 weeks from his calf injury.

Wolves: Raul Jimenez is suspended and is serving a 2 game ban after his recent red card. Ruben Neves is out for at least another month with a knee injury. Ki-Jana Hoever is out with a hamstring injury with no fixed date of a return.

Newcastle vs Wolves Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 1-1.

The last 5 meetings in a row has seen both teams to score.

Earlier this season in the reverse fixture Wolves won 2-1.

Newcastle have failed to win a home league game over Wolves in 11 years.

Newcastle vs Wolves Prediction:

This is a difficult game for Newcastle as they have quite a poor record over Wolves but Eddie Howe will point out to his club not to panic given they have had so many games away from home lately. This should feel like a party atmosphere on Friday evening a return that fans have been waiting for with the way the fixtures have panned out.

Recently we have seen a lot of swagger and confidence from Newcastle, they have lost their last 3 games but if we analyse them it was only in one game v Tottenham that they suffered. The Magpies pushed Chelsea all the way in an intense match that only finished 1-0 to the Blues. Against Everton it took a 99th minute winner to defeat them and nine times out of ten that was a game heading for a 0-0 draw.

Newcastle can rediscover that confidence and self belief being at home again and the bulk of their injuries has cleared up too. Wolves are dangerous and play well away from home but they will miss Raul Jimenez up front. We expect a close game with goals but feel Newcastle with the crowd behind them can edge this game.
