Newcastle vs Tottenham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 23rd April 2023
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

A huge game will wrap up the Premier League weekend and it could give us a big insight into which of these sides will be finishing in the top 4 to claim Champions League qualification for next season. Newcastle will be regarded as the favourites being at home and despite losing their last game, 3-0 against Aston Villa, Eddie Howe’s side have been in solid form having won 4 of their last five games. Newcastle are in 4th place, have 56 points, are 3 clear of Tottenham, and have a game in hand, so it is certainly advantage for the Magpies. Incredibly Howe’s side have had to play their last 3 games away from home and haven’t played here since the beginning of April. That was a game that the fans will long remember as they beat Manchester United 2-0 and at home the club has been a real force. Newcastle have lost just once here so far and have won 8 games, this includes winning their last two here and with just 9 goals conceded they have the second best home defensive record in the league.

For Tottenham you feel that this game is a must win for them because if they were to lose the gap to 4th would be six points and they would have played a game more than their direct rival with just six games left to play. Indeed the pressure would be on Tottenham even to finish 5th given Aston Villa’s form and Brighton would be right behind them too with two games in hand. This could all go wrong very quickly for Tottenham if they do not win this game, but it seems like quite a task is in front of them.

Form has simply not been good enough and they lost their last game at home to Bournemouth and have won just once in their last four games. That win which came against Brighton was very fortunate as VAR had made an error in denying Brighton a penalty. Away form does not bode well for Spurs who have no wins in their last four and we would have to go back to January for their last victory on the road when they beat Fulham.

Team News:

Newcastle: Allan Saint-Maximin is out with a hamstring injury but could return next week, he is the only current player injured for the club.

Tottenham: Ben Davies looks likely to miss out because of a lack of match fitness, Clement Lenglet will be assessed due to a muscle injury but is hopeful to be included in the squad. Lucas Moura is suspended but will return in midweek, Ryan Sessegnon and Emerson Royal remain sidelined long term.

Newcastle vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Last season Tottenham won this fixture 3-2.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Newcastle won 2-1.

The last 4 meetings have all seen over 2.5 goals.

Newcastle have not beaten Tottenham when at home for the last 5 games.

Newcastle vs Tottenham Prediction:

Tottenham have certainly had the better of Newcastle lately but that looks all set to change. We have already been given a hint of that when Newcastle won in London but Tottenham have got some very good results up north but with the quality now in this Newcastle side Tottenham would have to be seen as the underdogs to get anything here.

Tottenham are still clearly suffering from the fall out of Antonio Conte leaving the club in the middle of trying to finish in the top four, and it is clearly a messy situation. In contrast Newcastle are a very happy team and in a very good place. The owners have a project and you would have to say that Newcastle are well ahead of any ambitions they would have had. Newcastle can rubber stamp a top four place if they win here and being at home with the momentum of the home fans and having that confidence it is hard to look past the Magpies not to pick up all 3 points and go past Manchester United into third position would be the icing on the cake.

Newcastle vs Tottenham Betting Tips:

Newcastle to beat Tottenham at 1.80

Over 2.5 goals at 1.80
