Match Preview:

Newcastle’s Champions League qualification is almost secure and it would be nothing short of one of the biggest shocks in football for the club not to make the elite competition. It has been an incredible season for Eddie Howe’s side and while many observers knew that Newcastle were going to be the next force in English football with the money invested nobody knew the change around would be this quick. Newcastle have been in irresistable form and in their last two games they have scored 10 goals- smashing Tottenham 6-1 and then Everton 4-1 and the club come into this weekend in 3rd place with 62 points.

There is an 8 point difference between them and fifth placed Tottenham and the Magpies have played a game less so that is why a top four finish looks assured. Though Eddie Howe’s side did lose 3-0 away to Aston Villa a few weeks back his team have been in great form winning 4 of their last five games. At home Newcastle has just one defeat and not many will be expecting them to have another at the weekend. It’s 9 wins but they have drawn five, and had those been converted to wins then Howe’s side may have been challenging for the title. Still it’s 3 wins in a row at home and everything is looking very rosy for the club.

Southampton are almost 40 points behind their visitors and lie in bottom place. They are six points from safety and they looked doomed. The Saints showed a lot of fight against the league leaders Arsenal a week ago as they drew 3-3 away from home although they would be kicking themselves given that they were leading 3-1 with only two minutes left of normal play. In midweek losing 1-0 at home to Bournemouth was just poor and a real comedown from their Arsenal exploits and that means the Saints have just 24 points and this is a much needed win, but only Liverpool have managed to do that so far. To add to the misery, the Saints have just 2 points won away from home from 12 but you have to respect the fact that the club have been able to draw against both Arsenal and Manchester United recently.

Team News:

Newcastle: Allan Saint-Maximin is still out with his hamstring, he was due back but is set to miss an extra week at least.

Southampton: Romain Perraud has an ankle injury and could be assessed but remains a slight doubt. James Ward-Prowse was ill in midweek and will have to be assessed. Mohammed Salisu is out long term with a hip injury, Valentino Livramento has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness and could well miss out.

Newcastle vs Southampton Head to Head:

The two clubs recently met in the EFL Cup earlier this year and Newcastle who were at home won 2-1.

Last season this fixture finished 2-2.

It’s been 7 games since Southampton beat Newcastle and they haven’t won away from home since 2015.

Newcastle vs Southampton Prediction:

Newcastle are odds on for this and 1.25 to win so they won’t be attracting many punters. It could be a better idea to back goals in this game. We have seen that Southampton were able to score 3 away to Arsenal and look a tad more comfortable away from home and not in the eye of their fans, perhaps in a way there is less pressure. Southampton need to open themselves up and take risks but in doing so they will be exposing themselves to one of the quickest counter attacking teams in the league and together with a few goals we can see Newcastle winning this one quite comfortably.

There’s a lot of options for goalscorers for the home side and while we think the Saints can also get on the score sheet you have to respect a side that have just scored 10 goals in their last two games, and for now there looks like there is no stopping Eddie Howe’s team. The goalscorer market offers very good value and that could be the way to go for this one.

Newcastle vs Southampton Betting Tips:

Over 3.5 goals at 2.75

Anytime goalscorer: Joe Willock at 3.75

Anytime goalscorer: Alexander Isak at 1.83

Both teams to score at 2.10
