Newcastle vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 28th August 2021
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

It’s been an August to forgot for Newcastle who come into this game having lost both of their opening games. Those defeats came against West Ham at home and Aston Villa away and they have conceded six goals so far.

To add the problems the Magpies have already been knocked out of the EFL Cup as they drew 0-0 with Burnley at home only to go out on penalties. Are the cracks starting to show for this team under Steve Bruce? It certainly feels so. And yet of course football is ever changing, and so quick to turn the page that a victory here would make most of the problems over the past few weeks seemingly disappear.

Southampton lost their opening game 3-1 at Everton despite taking the lead and their next match against Manchester United seemed like a certain loss but not so. This time the Saints took the lead and almost held it, in the end drawing 1-1. It was a great point for the club and may just install the belief in the side once again.

In midweek the Saints made very light work of non league Newport beating them 8-0. It’s hard to read into that game though but the win would have felt good for the club who will try to move forward now.

Team News:

Newcastle: Paul Dummett could be assessed due to a lack of match fitness. Isaac Hayden is being tipped to play after his knee injury and will be assessed. Jonjo Shelvey has a calf injury and won’t return until the end of September.

Southampton: Stuart Armstrong is ruled out with a calf injury, William Smallbone is out long term with his knee.

Newcastle vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle won this fixture 3-2.

Southampton haven’t won away to Newcastle since 2015.

Both teams to score has happened in 3 of the last five meetings.

Newcastle vs Southampton Prediction:

Both teams will feel they need the win ahead of the international break and last season we witnessed 4 goals before half time. Now with fans back we think we will see an open game because Newcastle need to respect their opponent but also think of attack, they really can’t afford to lose 3 games in a row and especially two at home back to back.

For Southampton they are basically in the same boat though claiming a point against Manchester United will go a long way for the players. But the Saints do not have the greatest record at this ground in recent years. We do believe that they will be able to play their part though and thus we are tempted by the score draw as we expect to see goals.

Callum Wilson is a great talent up front for the Magpies and once he starts scoring the goals should come thick and fast and we will back him this weekend.

Newcastle vs Southampton Betting Tips:
