England Premier League
Saturday 20th April 2019
Kick off at 5:30pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park
Match Preview:
Newcastle ended 3 games without victory when they surprised Leicester with a 1-0 win at King Power Stadium. While the result may have looked like a surprise it was very much deserved as The Magpies showed their true potential as a club in what has otherwise been a difficult season for them.
They come into this game in 15th place and 7 points clear of the bottom three and they will be safe this season. Rafa Benitez’s team lost their last game at home but in general their form at St James’ Park has been excellent and before that defeat against Crystal Palace they had won 4 games in a row.
Southampton beat Wolves 3-1 in a terrific performance from the team who have diced with relegation for much of the season. The Saints are 5 points clear of relegation and there remains the smallest of chances that they could still get pulled in but like Newcastle they should be fine. Having said that, lose this game and if Cardiff were to stun Liverpool at the weekend all could change very quickly.
The good news for The Saints is that recent form is good with 3 wins from their last four. However, away from home the club have earned just 15 points from a possible 48 but in their last game on the road beat Brighton 1-0.
Team News:
Newcastle: The Magpies have no new injury concerns coming into this game
Southampton: Charlie Austin has a minor shoulder injury but is expected to play, but this could obviously affect him. Alex McCarthy will be assessed ahead as he has a muscle injury. The same problem applies to Matt Targett. Janikk Vestergaard has a muscle problem and he is 50/50 to return to the squad
