England Premier League
Sunday 21st June 2020
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park
Match Preview:
Newcastle have been keeping themselves busy in the headlines despite there being no football for the past 3 months. Their planned takeover which would have finally seen Mike Ashley sell up looks like it has fallen through, but there may be other takers. For now it feels as if the club are in limbo with regards to their immediate future.
The good news for Steve Bruce’s team is it looks like they will stay up. They are currently in 13th place and 8 points clear of the drop - another two wins should confirm their status, but it would be a shock to see them fall down now. Whilst Newcastle did win their last game before the shut down beating Southampton, that was their first victory in 5 games.
Sheffield United have already played last Wednesday evening when they were held to a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa. Though Blades manager Chris Wilder was rightly annoyed given that his team did score a goal but hawk eye technology failed to capture the evidence that the ball had crossed the line. Very hard luck on Sheffield United though they are in 6th place with 44 points and still poised to finish in a European place for next season. One would have to wonder if pound for pound Chris Wilder’s team have not been the best in the league so far?
Team News:
Newcastle: Matthew Longstaff is 50/50 to play as he has picked up a muscle injury. Sean Longstaff will be assessed after picking up a knock.
Sheffield United: John Fleck could be back in the team after missing the midweek game at Aston Villa with a knock. Jack O’Connell looks like he will be ruled out of this game with a knee injury.
Newcastle vs Sheffield Utd Head to Head:
Earlier this season Newcastle were victors beating Sheffield United 2-0.
Sheffield United have not beaten Newcastle in any competition since 2006, though they have only played each other six times in that period.
3 of the last 5 meetings has seen the correct score at half time 1-0 to the away team.
Newcastle vs Sheffield Utd Prediction:
Sheffield United will have fire in their bellies and be ready to attack from the first whistle. There will be a lot of frustration after what happened in midweek, and we shouldn’t forget that Chris Wilder’s team possess more quality than Newcastle.
As for Newcastle it is a mystery just how the players will perform, the Coronavirus will have affected them mentally much like United, but Sheffield have played a game already, but also the takeover talk. If the club do get bought does that mean that the players are looking at a new manager? With them looking safe, one has to wonder what is their motivation? Whilst this isn’t nailed on to see an away win, we think with everything going on behind the scenes at Newcastle, the Blades could get something here.
