Newcastle vs Sheffield Utd: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 19th May 2021
Kick off at 6pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

This is the fixture that could have turned out to be a decider for relegation a few months back but Newcastle finally kicked on and were safe with a month to spare.

It means that Newcastle can come into this game very relaxed and so in fact can Sheffield United given that they are of course relegated. The Magpies scored 3 goals past Manchester City in their last game but still lost, but manager Steve Bruce would have taken something from that game and at least he would have witnessed some seriously devoted play and goals from his team.

As it is Newcastle are in 16th place with 39 points and if they win their last two games then they have achieved exactly what they did last season. It’s been 7 points earned from their last 15 and certainly form has been patchy. At home the Magpies have lost too many this season, 8 so far and have lost their last 2. The clubs last victory at home came against West Ham in a 3-2 victory a month ago.

Sheffield United surprised everyone as they beat Everton 1-0 in their last game, and it was away from home. That was only the Blades 2nd win on the road so far. There is a small chance that the club could finish 19th though they would need to win their final two games, score goals and hope that West Bromwich Albion lose their remaining two games. That seems a distant hope.

Overall and perhaps what is ironic is that Sheffield United have won 2 of their last four games since being relegated. The damning report at least away from home is that they have scored just 8 goals so far.

Team News:

Newcastle: Elliot Anderson has a hip injury and will need to be assessed. Callum Wilson is out for the season with his hamstring. Fabian Schar is suspended for this game after an earlier red card. Jamaal Lascelles is out with a foot injury.

Sheffield United: Ethan Ampadu has a pelvic injury and is set to miss the rest of the season. Sander Berge is likely out with a muscle issue. Jack O’Connell (knee) and Billy Sharp (thigh) are out for the season.

Newcastle vs Sheffield Utd Head to Head:

Newcastle won this fixture last season 3-0.

4 from the last seven meetings has seen over 2.5 goals.

3 of the last four meetings has seen more goals in the 2nd half.

Newcastle vs Sheffield Utd Prediction:

This isn’t the final game of the season for both clubs but it might have that ‘feel’. Both sides will feel that they come into this game in good spirits because Newcastle scored 3 against Manchester City and Sheffield United even though relegated seem to have got over that and the tension has disappeared as the relegation race has been tied up.

This means hopefully we will see an open game and goals. We will back the Magpies to win and reach the 40 point marker and shouldn’t wonder too long about how the Blades may win back to back away games. It could happen but after the season they have had it doesn’t seem likely.

Joe Willock has been in great form recently and we should back him to get a goal in midweek to go with the home win.

Newcastle vs Sheffield Utd Betting Tips:
