Newcastle vs Man Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: St James' Park

Match Preview:

The two United’s will clash on Saturday evening and we should be in for quite a game with no love lost between these two. For a certain generation these two teams became title rivals in the mid to late 1990s and the feeling is Newcastle have never been able to step outside of Manchester United’s shadow but times are changing, or are they? Coming into this season would it be seen as a surprise if Newcastle were to finish above United? As it stands the Magpies are only trailing Erik ten Hag’s side by a point and it is a game that Eddie Howe’s side need to win. It is easy to lose touch in this league and Newcastle are already seven points adrift of league leaders Arsenal. Form for the home side has been decent with just one loss in their last five and their last league game finished in an excellent 4-1 win over Chelsea.

In midweek Newcastle deserved victory over PSG away from home in their Champions League match but PSG were awarded a soft penalty in the final minutes of injury time and that game ended 1-1. At home the Magpies have an excellent record of six wins from seven games played only losing against Liverpool so far whilst they have scored 18 goals and conceded just four times.

Manchester United could well crash out of the Champions League at the group stages. They blew a two goal lead at Galatasaray to end that game with a 3-3 draw. It was exciting but was another negative moment for the Red Devils. They are in sixth place on account of their healthy away record where they have won their last four games in a row beating Burnley, Sheffield United, Fulham and Everton and overall they have been able to pick up 12 points from 18 and on away form alone they would sit in fourth place.

Recent form has seen three wins in a row and 12 points from their last 15 and while United still look like losing most games they enter they have been chalking up the wins and are just four points from a top four place and only five behind Manchester City.

Team News:

Newcastle: Callum Wilson is expected to miss out again but could be back next weekend from a hamstring injury, he will be assessed. Elliot Anderson and Harvey Barnes aren’t expected back until the Christmas period at the earliest. Joseph Willock, Matt Targett and Javier Manquillo could face lengthy spells out. Dan Burn won’t return until next month with a back injury, Sean Longstaff is expected to miss out with his ankle. Sven Botman remains out long term with his knee injury. Sandro Tonali is suspended for the season.

Manchester United: Mason Mount is 50/50 to return from a calf injury and probably will not be risked but could be back next week. It is more of a longer term injury for the club than recent ones and Amad Diallo, Casemiro, Jonny Evans, Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez all remain out and could well all miss the rest of the year. Christian Eriksen could return next week from a knee injury and Jadon Sancho remains unavailable.

Newcastle vs Man Utd Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle won this fixture 2-0.

4 of the last five meetings have seen under 2.5 goals.

Newcastle vs Man Utd Prediction:

You have to fear for Manchester United here and maybe that isn’t a statement said so frequently over the years. If Eddie Howe has his side fired up they could score quite a few goals. Manchester United have found form, but look at who they have been beating recently all clubs in the lower half of the table. Everton have had their struggles this season and yet had 24 attempts on goal, had they had better quality and better finishers like Newcastle surely the Toffees would have found a way to win. Newcastle do not mess about at home and they have already silenced Chelsea with four goals against them last weekend.

The one worry is the trip to France and how that didn’t come off well for a club who could be heading out of the Champions League but they possess everything this current Manchester United side do not have, drive, passion and hunger. United has quality of course but they could get overwhelmed in this game and we wouldn’t see that as a surprise.
