Match Preview:
The dream for Newcastle is still alive and if they were to finish 4th this season the achievement would be magnificent and it would seem that the club are well ahead with their project. This game will also give the Magpies the chance to avenge their defeat to Manchester United in the recent Carabao Cup final.
Newcastle come into this weekend in 5th place with 47 points and two behind 4th placed Tottenham. However the good news for Eddie Howe’s side is that they have two games in hand over the Londoners and form has picked up again with back to back wins against Wolves and Nottingham Forest. Both of those games ended in the same score line of 2-1 and they were needed after a wobble which included losing to Liverpool and Manchester City, but it seems like the club has recovered now.
At home it is just one defeat so far for Newcastle but they have drawn five games, although they have won 7 from 13. They have been dropping points at home recently though with just 8 points won from their last 15- granted not the worst record but it is telling when you are chasing 4th place with two months of the season left.
Manchester United are in 3rd place and that will be their highest positon finish realistically as they trail Manchester City in 2nd by 11 points. Since winning the Carabao Cup United’s form has taken a dip. First there was their nightmare 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool and then they could only draw at home to bottom club Southampton and their top 4 credentials are back in the balance especially if they lose here and Tottenham push on.
Away form has seen the Red Devils win six games but they have also lost 5 with just one win in their last four. Scoring goals for a team with a lot of attacking quality has been a worry with just 17 converted so far on the road, Brighton have scored 7 more and Leicester who have struggled for most of the season have scored 5 more.
Team News:
Newcastle: Miguel Almiron remains out with a thigh injury and is not expected back until the end of the month. Sven Botman will be assessed following illness, Anthony Gordon remains a doubt with a lack of match fitness and may not be risked. Nick Pope is hopeful to return from a thigh injury.
Manchester United: Casemiro is serving a 4 game ban and not due back for two weeks. Christian Eriksen remains sidelined with an ankle injury and is not due back until the end of April. Tom Heaton is out with his ankle, Alejandro Garnacho is a major doubt with an ankle injury. Marcus Rashford has a knock but is being tipped to be fine and Anthony Martial should be fine despite fitness issues and ready for this game.

Newcastle could go third with a win and go past Manchester United, it is a huge game for both sides. Recent games have been close and the domincance that Manchester United had over Newcastle for so long has pretty much disappeared. This is a resiliant Newcastle side who have rarely lost this season, but questions will be asked and they will be tested.
Draws have been the order of the day for Newcastle this season and it has hampered them from having a comfortable top 4 place and now it is touch and go. Manchester United remain the side with the experience and we believe they can come here and really test Eddie Howe’s side. Like much of the games this weekend this looks like another one that will be close and could well end up as a draw.
