Newcastle vs Man City: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Tuesday 29th January 2019
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Newcastle will be the underdogs when they take on Manchester City on Tuesday night.

The Magpies are 17th and are just two points from the relegation zone and come into this game having won just one match from their past five. The good news is that win was their last game which ended in a 3-0 victory over Cardiff. This was also the clubs first home win in over 2 months.

The problem for Newcastle has been upfront where they have scored just 19 goals all season (10 at home) and that is the joint 2nd to worst record in the league. It is obvious if you don’t score goals you end up in the Championship.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez used to be involved in title run ins but that is since long past and yet he could still influence the league this season. The ex Liverpool manager could do his former club a favour by taking points from City and Newcastle will certanly shape up to frustrate their opponents. It would not be a surprise to see them switch to a 5-4-1 for this game.

Manchester City have shown no mercy in their recent cup games and a lot of credit must go towards Pep Guardiola. He is the type of manager that wants to win everything and there seems to have been a false sense of security that the club would let the league go and concentrate on the Champions League, that simply hasn’t been the case.

City have won their last 4 games in a row and remain 4 points adrift of Liverpool. The club have won 7 of their 11 games on the road, though have lost 2 from their last five. Along with Liverpool they have conceded the least amount of goals away from home with 7.

Team News:

Newcastle: Mohamed Diame is expected to miss this game with a hip injury. Ki Sung-Yueng has a hamstring injury and is expected to miss the next 2 weeks. Jonjo Shelvey is 50/50 to play with a thigh injury. Yoshinori Muto is away at the Asia Cup with Japan.

Manchester City: Vincent Kompany could return after a knock but is 50/50 and will be assessed. Benjamin Mendy returned from injury but now has swelling and it is unsure if he will make this game

Newcastle vs Man City Head to Head:

The last time the teams played here Manchester City won 1-0.

Manchester City have won 4 of their last 5 meetings at St James’ Park.

Newcastle vs Man City Prediction:

This is the psychological game over Liverpool for City. For the first time they go first in the fixture list and so have the chance to reduce the lead down to 1 point, could this play on Liverpool’s minds? That is the idea. City are massive odds on to win this game and there is no value to be had given that they are also away from home.

We would be happy to take Newcastle on the handicap win here and to start with 3 goals. From the last 15 games going back almost 20 years at St James’ Park backing Newcastle to start with a 3 goal lead would have a 100% success rate. City should win this game but the match could be closer than one thinks.
