England Premier League
Sunday 21st August 2022
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park
Match Preview:
If you believe the hype machine Newcastle will be the next Manchester City so this fixture has plenty of spice to it before a ball is even kicked.
Certainly with the money injected into the club Newcastle have improved from this time last year and they come into this weekend unbeaten and in 5th place. The Magpies beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 on the opening weekend but could only draw 0-0 away to Brighton and were not the best side in that clash. Newcastle have been very strong at home though since the turn of the year and will come into this game with a lot of confidence.
Alongside Arsenal the champions Manchester City are the only team to have a 100% record. They are looking very sharp after beating West Ham 2-0 and then Bournemouth 4-0 and Pep Guardiola will be delighted that his side have done all of this and kept a clean sheet. City are already looking like the red hot favourites to win the league again and their main rivals Liverpool have already dropped 4 points- that is huge if any of their epic battles are to go by in the past.
Team News:
Newcastle: Fernandez was being pencilled in to return for this date but he is still a major doubt with a calf injury. Ryan Fraser will be assessed after his back injury. Emil Krafth looks set to miss out also with a back injury. Jamal Lewis hasn’t been ruled out just yet but is struggling with his groin. Matt Targett is only 50/50 to return for this game with his hamstring and Jonjo Shelvey is out until November with his hamstring injury.
Manchester City: Cole Palmer will be assessed with his foot injury and is only 50/50 to return. Kalvin Phillips has a muscle injury and is ruled out. Aymeric Laporte is not due back for another 2 weeks with a knee injury.
Newcastle vs Man City Head to Head:
Last season Manchester City won this fixture 4-0 and over their two games scored 9 goals without reply.
Manchester City have won the last 6 meetings in a row and Newcastle haven’t recorded a victory over them since 2019.
There is an 80% chance to see over 2.5 goals and a 60% chance to see over 3.5 goals.
Newcastle vs Man City Prediction:
Newcastle haven’t conceded a goal yet but this is a fixture that has goals written all over it and we think there will be a few at the weekend. However whether Manchester City can walk all over Newcastle like they have been doing, 13 goals scored against the Magpies in their last 3 meetings, is another question altogether. Newcastle will be upbeat here and they will want to show City that they are a difficult side to beat at home. Observers will expect Eddie Howe’s side to have a very good home record.
We can’t see past a win for Guardiola’s side though but it is still off putting to see them at 1.30 to win here given how much Newcastle have improved, so we will look into different markets. Certainly new striker Erling Haaland will be itching to get on the score sheet after failing to do so against Bournemouth. City should get the 3 points but for neutrals this could well be a memorable game with end to end play and plenty of chances for both sides, certainly we will take on both teams to score here even if Newcastle found that hard last season. Fingers crossed we could see a classic Premier League game here.
