Newcastle vs Man City: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

It’s not easy if you have only won one game so far this season and your next opponent is Manchester City and that is the problem Newcastle will have when these two teams meet this Sunday.

The Magpies are in 19th place and their 9th defeat of the season came in midweek when they lost 3-1 at Liverpool. For a fleeting moment there was hope for the Magpies who had taken the lead but it was never going to last long and in the end they were simply overpowered as the Reds eased to a fairly easy win in the end. Newcastle are back at home and after defeats against Liverpool and Leicester where they conceded seven goals in those ties they will be happy to return home, well kind of happy given who there opponents are.

Despite a poor start to the campaign it isn’t all doom and gloom for Newcastle just yet who are three points from safety although because of the goal difference to Watford it is in theory a four point gap.

Not many clubs can win 8 games in a row and that is what makes Manchester City so special. But nothing is certain for the club and while Chelsea have slightly slipped off the title race with a four point gap to City now Liverpool are right up there and are just one point behind Pep Guardiola’s side.

And Guardiola could not have asked for anything more as he witnessed his side put seven goals past Leeds in their last game. Liverpool have still scored the most goals in the league with 48 so far but City rule the roost when it comes to defence with 9 goals conceded. For many it was City’s midfield and defence which won them the league last season and it might be the case for this one too, but they have plenty of options for scoring goals. The clubs last away game ended in a 3-1 victory over Watford.

On their travels Manchester City has the joint best record in the Premier League with 19 points won from a possible 24 with just one defeat and they come into this game having won their last 4 away games.

Team News:

Newcastle: Fernandez is out with a thigh injury, Jamal Lewis has a hamstring injury and isn’t due back until the end of the year or beginning of next. Allan Saint-Maximin is being tipped to be fine for this game but he has a knock and will need to be assessed.

Manchester City: The club have no new injuries ahead of this game and their only casualty is Ferran Torres who has been out long term with his foot injury, the forward is due to return in two weeks time.

Newcastle vs Man City Head to Head:

Last season this game ended in a 7 goal epic which finished 4-3 to Manchester City.

Manchester City have won the last 4 meetings in a row and the last seven from 10 games.

Newcastle have won just 2 games against Manchester City from the last 30 dating back to 2005.

Newcastle vs Man City Prediction:

Even though Newcastle are at home victory here would go down as the shock of the season so far when we consider how poor they have been and how good Manchester City have been. There doesn’t seem to be much hope for Newcastle who will need to defend for lengthy periods during the game and will also need a man of the match performance from the goalkeeper.

It says everything you need to know when one can sense that the only way Newcastle would win this game is if Manchester City simply didn’t perform to their normal standards. We know City are capable of no shows during a season, it is rare but can happen, but we don’t expect it to this weekend. City look good for the win but their odds are not favourable so we will have to look into different markets.
