England Premier League

Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Such is the superiority of Liverpool and Manchester City many believe that the two clubs simply are not going to drop any more points but should Liverpool be cautious about this game?

Newcastle have not lost at home since December 19th when they were thrashed by Manchester City and it has been clear as day that Eddie Howe’s first task with the club was to sort out their home games, that coming to St James’ Park with the new investment in the club had to become one of the hardest grounds to travel too. Newcastle are tipped for greatness with the money they now have but it is baby steps at this point in time and winning games and being consistent at home has to be the first box ticked.

True Newcastle spent in January but their progress has been nothing short of stunning. At the turn of the year the Magpies were in the bottom three and now they are in 9th place. That may well end up being the highest possible finish for Howe’s side but they will probably set their sights on Wolves in 8th now although there is a six point difference and Bruno Lage’s side has a game in hand. Form for Newcastle is brilliant with their last 4 games won and last weekend they overcame Norwich away from home winning 3-0.

What another week it has been for Liverpool as they chase the quadruple. First they kept up the titanic chase with Manchester City for the Premier League title by beating Merseyside rivals Everton 2-0, then they repeated that scoreline in the Champions League beating Villarreal. That was the first leg semi-final played at Anfield and Liverpool look concrete favourites to make it to their 3rd final in the last five years. The Reds will have the 2nd leg of that game at the back of their minds as their attentions turn back to Premier League football and they are in 2nd place and just 1 point behind the champions Manchester City. Such is the dominance of both sides they could well meet in the final of this years Champions League.

Form wise Liverpool have 13 points from their last 15 dropping only two as they drew 2-2 away to Manchester City, but their record this year has been near to flawless. Away from home four draws means they have the 3rd best away record but have still won 10 games from 16 and with 40 goals scored have netted the most away goals in the league.

Team News:

Newcastle: There are no new injuries but striker Callum Wilson may have a one week delay from his return from a calf injury as was due back for this game. Kieran Trippier (foot) and Ryan Fraser (hamstring) are struggling to be back by the end of the season.

Liverpool: Roberto Firmino is being pencilled in to return for this game from a foot injury. Curtis Jones will have to be assessed because of illness which forced him to miss the teams European game in midweek.

Newcastle vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 0-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Liverpool won 3-1.

It’s been 11 games since Newcastle last beat Liverpool going back to 2015.

There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.

Newcastle vs Liverpool Prediction:

It’s easy to think that Liverpool can turn up, perform well and get the win and follow the script. But this is a stern test for the Reds who will probably have to score early to settle nerves. Let’s go back to Liverpool’s game against Everton last weekend, another must win match since Manchester City had won earlier. The way Everton set up frustrated Jurgen Klopp’s side so much that it was still 0-0 at half time in a game in which many expected Liverpool to score early and get a few goals. In the end Liverpool found a way and it’s very possible that they will again in this game.

There is no love lost between these sides though and Newcastle would love to continue their great form and derail Liverpool’s season at the same time. Liverpool clearly have the better team but Newcastle cannot be taken lightly at home. We all know the quality of Liverpool and not even a Champions League semi-final will get in their way but they are 1.44 to win this game against a very good home side and that may not represent the best of value, so let’s increase it with a "-1 asian handicap" at no extra risk.

Newcastle vs Liverpool Betting Tips:

Asian handicap (-1 Liverpool) at 1.65

First goalscorer: Mohamed Salah at 4.33

Both teams to score at 1.91
