Newcastle vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 27th August 2023
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: St James' Park

Match Preview:

This will be a titanic game given that both of these sides could be title challengers this season and at the very least both will be fighting for a top four place. Newcastle at home have been a difficult side to beat over the past 18 months just ask a good side in Aston Villa who came here on the opening weekend of the season and lost 5-1! This result really set up the Magpies to go and conquer but that came to an end in their very next game as they lost away to Manchester City. But that looks like it is down to unlucky fixtures having to face City away in only their second game of the season. Eddie Howe’s side will be looking to bounce back in this game to winning ways and will want to avenge last season's defeat by Liverpool here.

Liverpool started solid enough with a good point away to Chelsea and then they followed that up with a 3-1 home win over Bournemouth. The Reds were not always convincing in that first home game but they are full of quality and together with new players gelling they should get stronger as the season goes on. This game of course represents a difficult one for Jurgen Klopp’s side as Newcastle have become the new rival to contend with, possibly now stretching the famed term of the big six to the big seven.

Team News:

Newcastle: Javier Manquillo is out with a lack of match fitness. Emil Krafth won’t return until the end of September at the earliest due to his knee injury. Joseph Willock is out for at least 3 weeks due to his hamstring injury.

Liverpool: Thiago Alcantara remains out due to fitness issues but could return in 10 days time. Ibrahima Konate is 50/50 due to a muscle injury and looks set not to be risked for this game. Curtis Jones is out with an ankle injury but could return next week.

Newcastle vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 2-0.

Liverpool have won the last 4 meetings over Newcastle and the Magpies have not recorded a victory over the Reds in 8 years.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Newcastle vs Liverpool Prediction:

Last season Newcastle rarely lost games at home and it was this terrific record which led them to surprise many and qualify for the Champions League. However Liverpool were one of the sides to beat them and indeed the Reds did the double over them, you wonder how much that will be playing on both sets of players' minds coming into this game?

Liverpool have a very good record over Newcastle and remain a solid and difficult side to beat. If we see vintage Newcastle at the weekend we think they can record what is becoming a rare victory over the Reds. They have looked impressive at home in the one game we have seen them play but also last season they kept progressing. And that is the question, are we seeing a side who keep progressing playing a team in  Liverpool who remain superior, bigger but less hungry after winning everything. Write Liverpool and any successful side off at your peril of course but this remains a big test for Klopp and Liverpool to see where they are at this season, it is risky but we feel the value is on a home win in what should be an end to end and entertaining game and a non stop one at that, very fitting to end the weekend games with.
