England Premier League
Saturday 18th February 2023
Kick off at 5:30pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park
Match Preview:
Newcastle have lost just 1 game so far and it was against Liverpool and they will not only be looking to avenge that defeat but to kick on in their hopes of finishing in the top 4. Newcastle really have punched above their weight but there is that nagging feeling that despite their great efforts a top four place may elude them. This has been underlined by how many points have been dropped this season with draws and the Magpies have drawn 50% of their games so far which is incredibly high. Indeed with 11 draws so far that is by far the most in the Premier League and more than Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United combined.
It should come as no surprise then to learn that Eddie Howe’s side have drawn 4 of their last five games. All these dropped points means that while the club are in 4th place they have let Manchester United go past them and create a 5 point gap and Tottenham in 5th are just two points behind. Still Newcastle have to be respected and they have the best defensive record in the league with just 13 goals conceded the next best is Arsenal with 21 and at home Howe’s side have let in just 6 goals.
Liverpool have been very poor by their usual standards this season but they did receive a pick me up and a major one as they beat local Merseyside rivals Everton 2-0 at home. It was the Reds first league win of the year incredibly and ended a miserable run of 5 games without a win. The victory moved Jurgen Klopp’s side past Chelsea into 9th place and a top four finish has become possible. Though they are 9 points shy of Newcastle if they win here we must remember they also have a game in hand so quickly enough that gap could be cut to just 3 points.
However if Liverpool have any hopes of finishing in the top 4 they will need to improve their away form which has seen just 2 wins from 10 games played and earning 8 points from 30. On away form alone Liverpool would be in 15th place.

Callum Wilson had a scare with his hamstring but should be fine for this game and Javier Manquillo will miss out again due to a lack of match fitness.

Newcastle vs Liverpool Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 1-0 to Liverpool.
Liverpool have won the last 3 meetings in a row.
Newcastle haven’t beaten Liverpool in 13 games going back to 2015.
Newcastle vs Liverpool Prediction:
The worry for Liverpool is that they come into this game having lost their last 3 away fixtures, that is bad enough but it gets worse when you see that in each of those games they conceded 3 goals. And perhaps for some observers it gets worse when you see that the clubs that inflicted such defeats were Brentford, Brighton and Wolves. All good clubs, but this is Liverpool and the bar has to be higher than consistently losing like this.
On the flip side Newcastle will be protecting an unbeaten home record and let’s remember that when they did lose at Anfield it was in the final moments of injury time, literally the last kick of the game. The market is really open in this game and one has to wonder will Liverpool get their mojo back as their key injuries start returning. Will we get to see the Liverpool we all know or is the win over Everton simply a home victory over a side in the bottom three? Personally we don't see Liverpool beating Newcastle at St James'.
