Newcastle vs Leeds: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 31st December 2022
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

They may not be the best regarded side in the Premier League but the buzz and the excitement coming out of St James’ Park cannot be equalled. Newcastle keep scoring goals, keep playing good football and keep winning. It’s seven wins in a row for the Magpies and just one loss so far but this is a highly competitive league and it still means they are in 3rd place. However no one at the club expected to see this kind of progress so quick and so everyone will be delighted by it. While they are seven points behind Arsenal they are only 2 points shy of the champions Manchester City and there is no doubt that this has been a superb start to the season.

The one worry was perhaps how the players would return from the World Cup and a six week break but those fears were quickly put to bed as they swept aside Leicester 3-0 away in their last game. At home the Magpies remain undefeated and they will be the favourites to win this game They have the 3rd best record in the league at home with 18 points won from a possible 24. Their last win here came against Chelsea and they have conceded just 5 goals so far.

Leeds restarted the league by losing 3-1 at home to Manchester City in what was always going to be a difficult returning fixture for Jesse Marsch’s side. They battled relegation last season and it looks like they will be doing the same in this one as they are down in 15th place and only 2 points from dropping into the bottom three. Leeds have lost 3 of their last 5 games, which includes losing their last two. Away from home they have the second to worst record in the league winning just 4 points from a possible 21.

Team News:

Newcastle: Alexander Isak has a thigh injury and while he may be assessed it seems more likely he will be missing for at least the next 2 weeks. Jonjo Shelvey is out for at least 6 weeks due to a calf injury. Callum Wilson missed out last time due to illness but he is tipped to return for this game. Emil Krafth is out for a possible two months due to his ongoing knee injury.

Leeds: Patrick Bamford will be assessed due to fitness issues after an injury he is touch and go to be included here. Stuart Dallas should be back in two weeks after his leg injury. Archie Gray is also scheduled to return in two weeks.

Newcastle vs Leeds Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 1-1.

It’s been 9 years since Newcastle last beat Leeds when at home.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Newcastle vs Leeds Prediction:

They call it all change and that’s what we think we will see here. Put simply Newcastle haven’t had it easy facing Leeds down the years but we think that will change here and while they haven’t won against Leeds at home in almost a decade the teams haven’t frequently played each other. Just based on form Eddie Howe’s side should ease to a win here and we will be backing the home win.

There are goals in this Newcastle side and it would feel like a surprise if Leeds got anything here. The way Newcastle started against Leicester considering the break was impressive and now they will be returning home and playing their final game of the year here also and the players will want to give the fans something to really cheer about here.
