England Premier League
Tuesday 26th January 2021
Kick off at 6pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park
Match Preview:
Newcastle are in poor form coming into this match and could get trapped in a relegation battle if they do not turn their form around quickly. The Magpies have lost their last 4 games.
Newcastle’s last game ended in a 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa at the weekend, indeed that was the only Premier League game to take place because of the FA Cup. The worry for manager Steve Bruce is that his side have not scored any goals in their last 3 games and one of their defeats came against Sheffield United- the Blades have won just one game this season.
So confidence will be low for Newcastle but they do have a 7 point safety net. The club have earned zero points this year and ironically the last time they did pick up anything was against Liverpool of all teams as they drew 0-0 at this ground. At home Newcastle’s overall form is average to say the least with just 3 wins from 9 games. Their last home game ended in a 2-1 loss to Leicester but at the same time they have only lost once at home in their last four games here.
Leeds are in 12th place and are four points the better of their hosts. Form has been a slight worry for Marcelo Bielsa’s side who have been recently knocked out of the FA Cup and have lost back to back games coming into this game.
Leeds last match was 11 days ago when they lost at home to Brighton, that felt like a poor result for the club not just with the defeat but also the low scoring game and Leeds have failed to score in their last two games, not a great return for a club who pride themselves on all out attack.
Leeds have picked up more points away from home (12) than at home (11). Currently they have won 4 games and lost 5 and have yet to draw on the road. Overall Leeds certainly haven’t been goal shy on the road and have scored 17 goals so far, only 3 other clubs have scored more.
Team News:
Newcastle: Ciaran Clarke has been ruled out with a calf injury. Paul Dummett is also out with a knock. Fernandez has a hamstring injury and is set for a spell on the sidelines. Javier Manquillo is 50/50 with a knock and will face a late assessment.
Leeds: The club have no new injury concerns but Jay-Roy Grot, Andy Forshaw and Robin Koch are out long term.
Newcastle vs Leeds Head to Head:
The clubs have not played each other when Newcastle have been at home since 2017 and that fixture ended 1-1.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Leeds won 5-2.
In the last 10 years the teams have played each other only 4 times and there is a 75% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
Newcastle vs Leeds Prediction:
Newcastle come into the game with low confidence and it will be interesting to see how Steve Bruce lines up his team and motivates them. The last time they played Leeds they conceded 5 goals playing a 4-4-2 yet Bruce has been cautious in other games packing the midfield instead, does he stick or twist?
It would be tempting to say that both sides would be happy with a draw here just to get something on the board having lost their last six games in a row combined. Leeds will go gung-ho again and that could leave space at the back for Newcastle to exploit and they will want to avenge their loss earlier in the season.
Goals should be the order of the day and backing Newcastle to get something from this game is also tempting considering the long odds at home against a side who should give them plenty of opportunities.
Newcastle vs Leeds Betting Tips:
