Newcastle vs Crystal Palace: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 21st October 2023
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: St James' Park

Match Preview:

It’s not been the greatest start or at least the start that Newcastle would have expected but slowly and surely it seems that Eddie Howe is now getting his side together and they are looking more in their stride as they enter this weekend. The evidence is that the Magpies have gone their last four games unbeaten with three wins and a draw which came in their last game as they drew 2-2 away to West Ham. The Magpies will be happy to return home and are fresh from smashing French champions PSG 4-1 and their last league game here finished in a 2-0 win over Burnley. Howe’s side could move up a couple of places with a win here and come into this weekend in 8th place and are seven points behind the league leaders Tottenham.

Crystal Palace are in 9th place and if they want motivation it is right in front of them because they would sail past their hosts with a win. Palace have blown hot and cold but they have also gone their last three games unbeaten after draws against Fulham and Nottingham Forest with both of those games finishing 0-0 and they impressively beat Manchester United 1-0 away from home. If Palace do drop points this weekend they would head into the bottom half of the table but overall fans will be content with what has overall been a solid start to the season.

Team News:

Newcastle: Harvey Barnes could be out for the rest of the year with a toe injury. Sven Botman remains a doubt and is only 50/50 to return from a knee injury. Alexander Isak is a doubt with a groin injury, Joelinton will be assessed with his hamstring injury. Joseph Willock is a major doubt with fitness issues as is Emil Krafth who has come back from a long term injury. Lewis Miley has been ruled out for almost three weeks with illness.

Crystal Palace: Chieck Doucoure is 50/50 to return after a hamstring injury. Eberechi Eze is out for at least two weeks with a hamstring injury. Jefferson Lerma remains a doubt also with a hamstring injury. Matheus Franca could make his debut after recovering from a back injury but will have to be assessed. Joel Ward is out with a groin injury and Jeffrey Schlupp will be assessed after suffering a muscle injury a few weeks ago.

Newcastle vs Crystal Palace Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 0-0, in fact the last three meetings in a row have finished in this scoreline.

The last five meetings have all been under 2.5 goals.

Crystal Palace has managed just 1 win over Newcastle from their last seven attempts.

Newcastle vs Crystal Palace Prediction:

Newcastle could have some key players out but Eddie Howe has a well drilled side now and we expect them to win this game. The value isn’t there on a home win at 1.44 unless you include the Magpies in a double. So the best option could be to back them on the ht/ft market. Both sides are suffering injuries but more so Palace with some key players out it feels like the glue that holds them together is not the strongest coming into what will be a difficult game for them.

Newcastle are full of goalscorers just ask Sheffield United and we expect this market to be of better value so it may be worth our time concentrating on this one. This is traditionally a low scoring fixture but we think that could change with the quality on show in this Newcastle side.
