Newcastle vs Crystal Palace: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 3rd September 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Newcastle were left stunned in midweek when they lost to a last minute injury time winner against Liverpool with that game ending 2-1. The Magpies had taken the lead through their new signing Alexander Isak, he also scored a second but was offside and already looks like a great signing. In fairness it was a game that Liverpool dominated and perhaps Newcastle’s ascent to greatness may take longer than some fans would want, but Eddie Howe’s side do look on the up.

Still perhaps there should be slight concerns giving that for all their good play the Magpies have not won a game since the opening weekend of the season against newly promoted Nottingham Forest, since then it has been 3 draws in a row and this defeat. However the last home game finished in an entertaining 3-3 draw against Manchester City and at one point they were 3-1 up, so it seems Eddie Howe’s side will be very hard to beat at home.

Crystal Palace are in 13th place and just one point behind Newcastle and so would leap frog them with a win. It’s just one win so far for Patrick Vieira’s side but they have looked menacing. Just ask Manchester City, in a game that Palace would go on to lose not many teams will come to the Etihad and give City such a scare as being 2-0 down by half time. In midweek Palace yet again led by the brilliant Wilfried Zaha were able to draw 1-1 with Brentford but given it was a home match you feel they would have been disappointed not to win the game.

Team News:

Newcastle: Bruno Guimaraes is a close to a comeback and will be assessed ahead of the game. Callum Wilson could still miss out though with his hamstring but should be back next week. Alexander Isak has a dead leg but is being tipped to be fine, Allan Saint-Maximin is 50/50 to return from a hamstring injury and will be assessed. Jamaal Lascelles has a knock but is expected to be fine. Emil Krafth and Jonjo Shelvey are both out long term.

Crystal Palace: Jack Butland looks set to miss out again with his hand injury but could return next week. Nathan Ferguson is out for at least the next four weeks due to a foot injury, James McArthur has a groin injury with no fixed return date. James Tomkins is missing with a calf injury and also has no return date.

Newcastle vs Crystal Palace Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle won this fixture 1-0.

There is a 90% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Stretching back 5 games these teams have alternated on wins when Newcastle have been at home, if the pattern continues then Palace would win this meeting.

Newcastle vs Crystal Palace Prediction:

Crystal Palace are the underdogs but they have played their part in games away to Newcastle in the past. We have a team who fully believe in their manager and that has been transporting onto the pitch where they have played good football even against teams you would have expected them to struggle against. This is a long trip for the Eagles though and they will have to make do without touching the ball for periods during this game.

Newcastle look on it and alert and despite not playing well at Liverpool they almost came away with a point. The club look particularly strong in midfield and we think they can win here and they are great odds of 2.00 to do so. Any side will have a difficult game up at Newcastle and they are looking like a well rounded team, certainly there is value on the home win given that Howe’s side are not odds on.
