Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: St James' Park
Match Preview:
Newcastle have started the season slower than last season and this has raised questions if Eddie Howe’s side can compete just as well. But the Magpies are still capable of providing real quality and it is possible that we are seeing an upturn of fortune from them right now. Just ask Sheffield United who last weekend were absolutely thrashed 8-0 by Newcastle. It was a unique result given that every goal was scored by a different player. While the Blades could well be one of the poorer sides in the league this season this 8-0 triumph you feel was needed for the team to believe in themselves and they have already carried this confidence through to their next game.
That game in midweek witnessed Newcastle knock Manchester City out of the EFL Cup as an Alexander Isak goal settled the tie at 1-0. Granted the EFL Cup isn’t going to be a huge priority for City this season but it is no mean feat to knock the best side in Europe out of any cup especially one that they have won numerous times over the past decade. In the league Newcastle sit in 8th place with 9 points and have won two in a row and they will be installed as the odds on favourites to win this game at the weekend.
Burnley lost their fourth game from five last weekend as they were narrowly beaten 1-0 at home against Manchester United. It’s just 1 point earned for Vincent Kompany’s side from 15 and it has been a tough start for the newly promoted side. This game looks daunting in fairness and it will be at home where the Clarets will have more of a say if they are to be relegated or not. It is of course early days and a couple of wins would change everything for the side, the good news is that they have experienced victory this season. It happened in midweek in the EFL Cup when they travelled to Salford and beat them 4-0. It was an expected result but gives some confidence to the team going forward.
Team News:
Newcastle: Harvey Barnes has a toe injury and could be set to miss the next 4-5 weeks. Bruno Guimaraes will be assessed for an ankle injury picked up in midweek. Alexander Isak is being tipped to be fine despite a minor calf injury. Dan Burn is a doubt with illness as is Martin Dubravka. Callum Wilson will have to be assessed as he has a hamstring injury, Alex Murphy remains a doubt with a knock, Joseph Willock is sidelined at least for 3 weeks with an Achilles injury and Emil Krafth has an ongoing knee injury
Burnley: Lyle Foster is suspended, Darko Churinov is expected to miss out again due to illness. Benson Manuel is out for a month with a knock, Hjalmar Ekdal is sidelined for some time with a knee injury. Nathan Redmond has been ruled out with a knock and isn’t expected to return for at least three weeks. Michael Obafemi remains out with his hamstring
Newcastle vs Burnley Head to Head:
It’s been almost two years since the teams last played each other here and that finished in a Newcastle victory as they beat Burnley 1-0.
Newcastle have won 4 of the past five meetings.
Burnley have not beaten Newcastle away from home in the league since 1976.
There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
Newcastle vs Burnley Prediction:
Take out the losses to Tottenham and Manchester City and Burnley have not been getting slaughtered in their defeats, they have kept it fairly close. With Vincent Kompany as manager, it seems natural that he will focus on defence more. However Burnley will face Newcastle away from home just after they put 8 past Sheffield United who also were narrowly losing games. We expect a home win and a few goals too, probably not as high as 8 though.
Newcastle are 1.30 to win this game so for better value it would make sense to look into the ht/ft market as we believe the Magpies will get off to a quick and strong start. There are some doubts over some key players but these are thought to be minor injuries for the home side, but it is best to check the very final team news just ahead of kick off.
