Newcastle vs Brighton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 18th May 2023
Kick off at 7:30pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

Newcastle can virtually end Brighton’s slim hopes of a Champions League finish and boost their own as the season nears to its climax. Newcastle are locked on 66 points with Manchester United although because of goal difference the Magpies are in 3rd place and it is a position that they will want to hold.

Eddie Howe’s side have been magnificent this season although they have gone their last two games without a win after a home loss to Arsenal and a 2-2 draw away to a fighting Leeds. At home Newcastle have been impressive and their recent loss to Arsenal was only their 2nd of the season. The Magpies have been able to win 10 of their 17 home games so far and the Arsenal loss is the only blemish in the last few months. Newcastle obviously cannot finish any higher than 3rd but coming into this week there was a chance that Liverpool could stage a remarkable comeback and displace either Manchester United or Newcastle for a top four spot so a win is incredibly important for Newcastle.

Brighton have more or less ended Arsenal’s title hopes as they beat the Gunners 3-0 in a resouding result that was richly deserved and it was also a fantastic reply to losing their last game 5-1 against Everton. Brighton’s chances of what would be a stunning top four place look very slim but they haven’t quite given it up just yet but one would feel that they would need to win here. A Europa League finish is certainly on the cards for the Seagulls and form is overall good with 3 wins from their last four games.

Newcastle: Sean Longstaff is set to miss out again due to his foot injury but hasn’t as of yet been ruled out for the season. Matt Ritchie has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury, Jamaal Lascelles is also out for the season due to his calf injury.

Brighton: Soloman March misses out due to his hamstring but could be back next week. Joel Veltman also has a hamstring issue and will be assessed but is only 50/50. Jeremy Sarimento, Tariq Lamptey, Adam Webster and Adam Lallana are all out for the season.

Newcastle vs Brighton Head to Head:

Last season Newcastle won this fixture 2-1.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture the game finished 0-0.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Newcastle vs Brighton Prediction:

These two teams should be applauded and the two managers have to be regarded as being up their among the best for this season. We expect to see a quality end to end game and even though Newcastle have wobbled a little lately there are goals in this side and we don’t expect them not to be able to score at home for a second successive game. Brighton will bring a threat and what more threat do you need with just beating Arsenal 3-0 away from home, but we think Newcastle will have enough quality to win this game, just.

This is a fixture that has witnessed few goals in it over the past decade but we can see a few being scored here and the over 2.5 goals market looks like a good one. Not many clubs can come here and win games and in an evening game the atmosphere here will be electric and we see that giving Newcastle the edge but of course Eddie Howe’s side will have to work for it.
