Newcastle vs Brighton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 5th March 2022
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park

Match Preview:

The only way is up for Newcastle and the Magpies having been in the bottom three have gone their last 7 games unbeaten. Eddie Howe’s side are up to 14th but are only four points from the drop and are not out of the woods yet. However it only feels like a matter of time before Newcastle will be safe and they will be pushing for a further 3 points on Saturday.

Newcastle beat Brentford 2-0 away from home in their last game and have won 4 of their last five games so even though they are 14th, on form they would be 2nd in the league, which says everything you need to know in terms of where the club are going. At home Newcastle are unbeaten this year and have won their last two home games with their last victory here coming against Aston Villa.

Brighton have been a breath of fresh air this season although have hit bad form and come into this game having lost their last 3. Manchester United, Burnley and Aston Villa have defeated the club recently and this just feels uncharacteristic from the Seagulls under Graham Potter. The club have fallen to 10th and are 10 points behind a European finish but with 33 points they will be fine this season, the worry though for Potter will be witnessing the season simply petering out.

On the road Brighton haven’t lost many games but they have drawn seven of them from 13 games. The club had gone on a four game undefeated run on the road but their last away game ended in defeat against Manchester United.

Team News:

Newcastle: Matt Ritchie is getting better but is expected to miss this game but should return for next week. Allan Saint-Maximin is only 50/50 to return from a knock. Kieran Trippier is out long term with a foot injury. Callum Wilson is out for another two months at least with a calf injury.

Brighton: Enock Mwepu has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness and is a doubt for this game. Adam Webster won’t return until next month with his groin injury.

Newcastle vs Brighton Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 3-0 to Brighton.

It’s been 10 meetings going back almost 5 years since Newcastle recorded a victory over Brighton.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Newcastle vs Brighton Prediction:

Brighton can only finish at best 9th this season and that is a blow to the club who, a few months ago, would have been looking at a Europa League finish. The squad remain solid but you have to question the motivation now and away games especially will be very difficult on them now.

Newcastle are in a good moment and they will continue to be strong and threatening at home. They have a bit of trouble against Brighton over the past decade and their record against them is not good, this could be the moment where the Magpies put that to bed and win and we think they could do so. They are a team brimming with confidence and you get the feeling that the players simply can’t wait to play again. The home crowd are behind the team 100% possibly for the first time since Kevin Keegan was here in the mid 1990s. Everything points to the home team here.
